87 300D California Edition

I keep reading about how cars from California have a different emission system, and to avoid them. The 300D I bought is from CA, however I don't know if it was always in that state. First, what telltale signs should I look for to tell if it was a CA emission car? And second, what is so bad about them that they should be avoided?
