Ignition tumber replaced, now doesn't engage
 

Hi all,
I just replaced the tumbler, and now the key will turn to position 1 & 2, but won't turn on the glowplugs or start the car. The old tumbler would go to positions 0 & 1 but couldn't move into 2 to start the car. Following the instructions and advice here, I bought a tumbler and replaced it, aligned it to what I think is the correct position. The key-in buzzer will turn on, but nothing else works. The key fully turns, but now turns past where I think the stopping point would be (beyond 2).
Any ideas or suggestions?

General rule for electrical problems is check the ground first. I believe the key switch has its own grounding wire (brown) that you might have omitted in the installation.

I hope this helps, or at least bumps the thread so somebody more knowledgable can answer.

On the 240 did you remove the electrical part of the steering lock ?
To do so without damage need the key to turn through to II to allow the electrical part to disengage from the lock assembly.

If you had to lever everything off and dismantle the electrical switch, you may have put the wires back in wrong sequence.

When ever this type of job arrives in my shop, I always replace the entire barrel/lock/electrical switch as an assembly, with a chassis id'd key.

If memory serves....the 240 has one blank socket/pin position in the electrical switch.

Assuming you simply removed the old tumbler by unscrewing the collar.
Then I can only imagine the new tumbler not going all the way in and seating
into the part that needs to turn.

Did the collar screw back down all the way ?

You must have looked a that already, but that part is so simple.
Seems really odd.

thanks for the responses. still no go. I took the tumbler out again because I thought perhaps it wasn't seated right, and reinstalled it. it is in the correct position, and I did it by turning the key to II and unscrewing the collar like you're supposed to. I don't know anything about wires... the old tumbler I took out had no wires to it, and the new tumbler didn't seem to have any blank connections. It seems like the assembly behind the tumbler is somehow broken?
I did recharge the battery and test it for shorts (excessive drain when everythings off...none..) I know the car pretty well since I replaced tons of stuff a year ago (starter, alt, battery, glow plugs, GP relay, fuses, on and on...)
any more ideas would be greatly appreciated! thanks for your time!
