I don't doubt it that leaks may have developed after adding Dexron ATF in those two cases, but was it coincidence, were the seals ready to go anyway or was it caused by the Dexron? Not sure that anyone really knows. I bet there are lots of guys still using Dexron ATF with no leaks. Is it wise to use power steering fluid? Maybe.

Been using ATF in mine since day 1 with no issues though.

Am I understanding this correctly?

Correct any power steering fluid will do.

The booklet recommending Dexron was published in 2001. When did Dexron III become widely available?

Mobil 1 ATF.

Flushed mine out last year after changing the filter and put in Mobil 1 ATF. No leaks yet. Must be better than Dexron
