w140 - OM 603 engine - common? good?
 

howdy folks:

i am working on a 95 S320 and am rather impressed with this saloon- yet as a diesel man - I will like a diesel - I see for a few years the OM 603 was available in the W140 - Is this correct
i saw a 3.0 I6 and a 3.5 I6 - dunno if I have ever seen one in person - care to comment

Both S300 and S350 have the same 3.4 liter engine. Used in all S class diesels from 1990 to 1995.

Search under 'rod bender'.

The 92-93 300SD and 94-95 S350 are the same car with the same 3.5l 603. The 96-up S300 which wasn't offered in the US has the 3.0l 606.

Avoid the 3.5L 603 diesel found in the '91-'95 S class vehicles.

The risk of a catastrophic engine failure is not worth the price unless you get the vehicle as a gift.

Thanks a bunch for the ad. Interesting - I had heard of the trouble with this engine before. Interesting they hold the value of something with such a well know troubled motor

i know this Star Motors - I may have a friend at loeber keep an eye out and see about the updated 603 OM - just for conversation sake

I've just been wondering...would the 606 drop into a S350 W140 without much trouble? Or did they modify the car when they switched to the 606? A turbo 606 in a W140 would be a great car.

606 has a lot of electronics. AFAIK 606 cars don't have mechanical throttle.

603 in 140 has a fair amount of electronics but if you pull the OVP relay or the alternator quits, you'll still get home.

W140 + 3.5L 603 = money pit.

I believe the SuprtTurbo Finns just replace the electronic injection pump on the OM606 with a mechanical one from an OM603.
