A/C Clutch ? for 82 300sd

How hard is to replace the clutch on the A/C compressor?
Do I need a series of special tools?
Is there a place in central NJ that rebuilds the units?
or, or, or.
Thanks for your help. This community has been a fantastic help to me.

Why do you conclude that the clutch is NG?

They do require some specialized tools to remove and install.

The tools to remove/install the compressor clutch are part of AutoZone tool loaner program.

caught in the clutches

Hi Brian, I havn't had the car very long ,6 weeks to be exact. The A/C belt was off the car when I got it. I wanted to find out if the compresor was working. I put a new belt on and when I put the A/C on, the belt started to smoke and the clutch wasn't moving. When the system is off the pully moves freely. I thought that was the sympton of a fried clutch. Do you have more insight into this problem?
Thanks Marshall

Try turning the compressor by hand (the center part, not just the pulley). If the compressor won't turn, it's likely that the compressor is seized, not the clutch.
