There is also another one that goes is installed between that one and underneath the radiator. I have been meaning to do this mod. Nice write up.

603-engined cars are the ones that need a real skid plate. It's waaay to easy to tap the 'glass jaw' of a 603's sump with a plus-height curb. Believe me.

I lost a 240D engine in a freak nose dive into a think iron plate a couple years back. Such a skid plate probably would have saved the engine.

I'll be talking to Phil about a plate for each of my cars.

For those trick fasteners into the frame-rails, I'd probably use some sort of 8mm speed-nut/blind-nut, possibly like the ones Mercedes uses to anchor the W123 front seats.
Or fashion something sturdy from some 1/4" x 1" bar-stock, with 8mm threaded holes.
Either way, it might avoid the prolonged frustration of struggling with needle-nose pliers or computer-chip tools, and losing nuts & washers.
Plus it would make it much more pleasent in the event the skid-pate needed to be removed for engine-repairs.

Happy Motoring, Mark

Nice! Wish I'd remembered that when I did mine.

That is a nice plate, i could use one of those on the 300TD (I foolishly lowered it an inch)

I plan on making one, mud season here gets deep/rough.

Not MB related, but here's a plate I made for the Audi. It was a piece of 1/4 scrap I bent to fit, cost nothing and offered good protection for the very vulnerable crank pulley, filters, pan on these cars.

It took a hard hit during this incident but I drove it home thanks to the skid plate!

I also installed a "panzer" skid plate on Wife's A4, already has saved the pan once.

If you decide to go with those factory speed-nuts, you might want to apply a bit of antiseize to the threads. Those speed-nut 'U' brackets aren't real sturdy in the event that a bolt gets rusted in there. I had one tear loose under a 240D seat, then it was impossible to remove or tighten it!
