'80 300SD won't go into PARK
Wife had car out and noticed the gear shift lever would not go into PARK when the car was stopped and the engine was running. As soon as the engine is shut off, the lever will go into PARK.
Anybody else experience this problem or know why it has happened or how to fix it? Tha car has about 245,000 miles and had a rebuilt transmission about 50,000 miles ago. P E H |

I'd look at the engine mounts -- if one is separated, you might have a physical obstruction to lever or linkage movement. There is no hydraulic reason the linkage won't move from reverse to park that I know of (unlike my old Oldsmobile Rotomatic, where low and reverse were hydraulically locked out about 30 mph -- and usually also by misadjustment of the internal linkage!)

Peter,
I'll have to get under it and see what I can find. Its no show stopper, but strange how as soon as the engine is stopped it goes into PARK easily. This is the first time car was used this year and the first time the no go into PARK has happened. P E H |

Did you ever find out why? My wife's car is doing the same thing.. except that her's won't go into reverse OR park until the engine has been shut off. Frank
