Hi all,

Just wanted to share my ALDA experience. I was able to pull it off without taking the manifold off. I didn't have a 24mm wrench, so I used two Stanley brand crescent wrenches that I bought at Walmart.

It took me a while to wiggle it off. The trick is to wiggle it towards the rear of the car as the screw-enclosure won't let you clear the IP lines. Pull off the rubber hose first.

My ALDA screw head also started to crack.. I gave it some anti-sieze spray. Then I used the supplied nut to hold the head together while twisting it loose.

Turn the nut so it is flush with the top of the head, and it will keep the screw head from splitting.

My impressions?

Whoa! Its like a new car! I turned it CCW all the way, and then back 1/2 turn. It smokes alot starting out, but the performance is incredible. All of a sudden my transmission shifts aren't as hard either. Engine temp seems to be cooler too?

I'm going to try turning it all the way and then try to find a happy medium.

I also have a 2001 dodge diesel and when I put a chip in it that increased the fueling it was also a 'whoa baby' difference. Not as huge of a difference on the mercedes, but definately alot more driveable. I no longer have to floor it to get it moving.

I used to have a 2004 Volkswagen Passat TDI diesel wagon and would enjoy blacklunging people behind me. On my first test-ride last night at 1am, I blacklunged the cop car that was behind me at two sequential stop lights.

Thank goodness they changed the law so mere 'exhibition of acceleration' is no longer a crime.

Report back in a month with your fuel mileage. Everyone talks about the adjusting, but not about what mpg effect that has. It would be interesting to know if you don't mind sharing that.

I adjusted my alda about a month ago and have not seen any difference in fuel economy. In this time period, i have made a run from Houston to Florida and back and a trip to Florida and back. I also drive stop and go traffic every day on I-10 in Houston...no difference in mileage. The performance has increase dramitically though. I am still not reporting 0-60 times like others on here but she is definately faster than i tought she'd ever be.

My MPG has not changed. 22mpg before, 22mpg after.

Now that you've removed it, take that protective cap off and leave it that way. Use the 10mm to loosen the lock nut then a short length of an old hacksaw blade to adjust.

1-1.5CCW is about best. More than that, car just smokes a lot more.

My fuel economy hasn't changed.

Not a 603, but on my 617, I've got mine maxed out and I still get 25mpg.

My first opportunity to check the milage brings me in at 23mpg.

I drive fairly aggressively. Not much highway. And I like to show people its a diesel.

I did the math on a tank of fuel before I did the alda and I think the highest I got was 25 or 26mpg. Not sure if that included a lot of highway miles.

This tank I'm taking it easy on the throttle and will report again.

So far 23 has been my average.

In having the SDL back on the road in earnest I'm interested in regaining some 'off the line' zip. I remembered this thread so I looked at the ALDA this morning..and all I can say is howinthehell did you get two wrenches in there (much less a piece of hacksaw and still see what you were doing)? Jeez, doing the 603s ALDA w/o removing the manifold has to be the diesel equivalent of proctology.

I never got the second wrench to work. The nut attached to the ALDA is just too thin.

So, use the large wrench on the big nut and it will rotate, hopefully, without the ALDA rotating with it.

Installation is the same deal, but, you just won't get it as tight as the gorilla who previously installed it.

You can do it with just one wrench, a flathead screwdriver, and a hammer. The wrench holds the nut, while you whack the screwdriver (placed at the spot where the nipple screws into the housing) with the hammer. You want to hit it so the nipple is being pushed towards the rear of the car. While you have the ALDA out, blow on the nipple to make sure the seal is good.

Right.

You can't very well adjust it on the vehicle. The screw is very tight and access is nearly impossible.

It's removable in about 3 minutes once you get the hang of it.

On my '87, the plastic clamp for the injection lines must be removed. You won't get the ALDA high enough to clear the IP mechanism without removing it. You'll see this clamp directly above and slightly forward of the ALDA.
