Question Catalyst?

I recently purchased an 87 300DT and looking it all over I noticed on the EPA sticker it said Non-Catalyst. Question is, were there both manufactured for use in the USA? It says it conforms to Federal and Ca. standards. The reason for my asking is the concern about the #14 head which mine has manf. in Jan 1987. And, off topic, have you all had good luck with the suction type oil change systems that use the dipstick tube? BTW the car has 175k on it and I am just going through all the fluid/filter changes and then suspension replacement. I appreciate your looking in and hope for help.

No MB passenger cars were manufactured in the US in 1987. Maybe you mean manufactured for US delivery?

The car was delivered with a trap oxidizer rather than a gasser type catalytic converter, hence the label.

The trap oxidizer recall replaces the trap oxidizer with an oxidation catalyst further down the exhaust path. I don't know if that negates the non-catalyst status. I don't think they alter or remove the label as part of the recall. If you see a device beside the transmission along the exhaust, that's the oxidation catalyst. Originally there was nothing between the turbo and the center muffler. Basically nothing between the turbo and the first coupling.

My Topsider serves me well. If I pull the plug after using the Topsider, a few drops at most will drip from the hole. I should warn you that this is a very volatile topic!

... stay tuned

You can call MBUSA and give them your VIN and they will tell you if there are any oustanding recalls. This will include the trap oxidizer which causes the engine to run hotter and lead to the cracking of the #14 head. I called them and they were able to tell me that the recall had been done on my car. I guess it is good that it is done, but my head is already cracked. I got a deal on the car because it is a non-runner.

Cool Nothing between!

No there is nothing between the turbo and the muffler. The trap oxidizer has been replaced with the output pipe. I did say cars for use in the USA not manf here. This is my 6th MB and 3rd diesel. Along with 3 BMWs which I own a 323i conv presently. I also have owned several Ford Diesels both IDIs and DIs. So they must have never installed the converter when the removed the trap Oxidizer because it has never been cut into. That is a good thing I suppose. Thanks.
