Can a front door striker be ajusted on a w126.Either up down or left right.?

I think it's the door that has to be adjusted. I don't know if the latch is adjustable. Most likely the hinges are.

Yes, adjustment is done on the hinges, and you can add shims to the striker eye.

The striker can be adjusted up, down, left, and right.

The four screws must be loosened (no easy task......make sure you use a socket bit and pray).........and then it slides around to where you need.

There are also shims to move it closer to the door, if required.

The door itself is adjustable via both sets of screws on the hinges.

It's quite a task to set one of these doors properly. I've done one of them but I still cannot get the M/B "thunk" to return.

I too have made this adjustment...once. It is no easy task to get everything adjusted where the door closes without having to slam it. I was never able to get that "thunk" back either.

I have a suspicion that the "thunk" requires the door to hit the seals before it hits the striker. The door must slow down on the seals just as the striker grabs it. Very difficult to achieve.

The two rear doors still have it.........be damned if I can figure out clearly how they did it.

I sat there adjusting my father's a couple months ago and the best I could get was for the door to close. It still doesn't close like it used to all the time. There has to be a good way to do this as I can't see a bunch of German assemblers sitting there for hours on end playing with this when they put these things together. I need to do this for three of the four doors on the wife's car but am not looking forward to the agravation of it all. This is clearly a project to tackle when everything else has been done and I am truly looking for something to fix...I doubt that day will ever come.

Thank you all for the wise advice....My only worry is those screws on the striker.They look to be very soft metal,maybe i should add some loose nut spray and just hope for the best...

Correct.

My advice is to find one of those "impact drivers". I seem to now recall that they are phillips screws. If I'm right, then that driver is just about mandatory.
