1999 E300DT Temperature Peak?
Just wondering what the highest folks have ever seen on the temperature gauge. Mine hit 100 the other day for the first time and it wasn't that hot outside (90). Air conditioning was on and the auxilliary fans were running. Coolant was recently changed with G05 Zerex and bled properly. Just never noticed it before.

Climbing mountains last week in the 90sF and my '98 never come close to 100C, maybe up to 90. Are you sure your fan clutch is working? You should hear a noticeable roar when it is engaged - I usually notice mine when the temp gauge goes a little above 80C and I come off a stop.

Mine is doing the same and am waiting for the new sensor I ordered to arrive. What does your actual values reading of sensor #2 output on the climate control unit? I've noticed that when I am stuck in traffic on a 90 degree day, my ambient sensor starts to climb over 135 within about 20 seconds. This makes me think that my sensor has moved and might be too close to the radiator since when back up to 70 mph, the temperature starts to fall back to about 5 to 10 degrees higher than the actual outside temperature.
I'll keep you informed as to how the new sensor works when it arrives and I'll be able to see if the original sensor has moved from its indended location.

I had the same problem with my 1999 E300 TD.
When I replaced the A/C compressor I pulled the radiator and pressure washed that as well as the condenser and the inter-cooler. Lots of dirt, bugs, grass etc. You may try replacing the fan belt, More than likely the problem. No doubt its dry rotted and slipping. Just remove the Plastic grill by turning the 2 fasteners 1/4 turn. Remove the top radiator support, horn and front support bracket. Carefully remove the assembly. Its a bit tricky Because the plastic surround is in the way. The belt just slips on. I was quite surprised …a big difference. Now when you sit in traffic and the fans kick in it sounds like a jet taxing down the run way……. In fact I heard a noise coming from under the hood the other day………. Now what!!! ……The fan sucked in the plug for the block heater!! I had to ty wrap it in place…. My temp now stays at 80 or below. I believe my fan clutch is working , However I do not know how to check it. |

Yeah, my car runs right at 80C virtually all the time. I've never seen anything close to 100C. I would check your visco fan...they're a weak link.

Mine goes a tad above the 80 mark. However, it is out outside and I have chipped the car.

I guess my fan clutch is defective too because I never hear the main radiator fan go into the high speed mode. Or is it supposed to do that only at really high temperatures? When climbing steep grades or sitting in stop-n-go traffic in the summer my temp regularly goes up to 100C and only the aux. fans kick on.

011 997 85 92 for the alternator belt
011 997 00 92 for the fan belt that hooks up the 2 front fans.

When you start up the car, does the front 2 fans turn? If both turn I would say it works. If one turns I would say the belt is broke and if they both don't turn, try turning them manually. Both turn means your motor is shot. One turns means you might have lucked out and have a broke belt.

I did not think mine went that high either, went out today, drove the MB, just to provide feedback here.
Outside temperature indicator started at 102, went to 105, maxed out at 106. Did some in-town driving with stop & go and out on the highway stuff, 20 minutes maybe, trust me in this heatwave it was warmed up. Mine never got close to 90 on the engine temperature. About a third of the way up from the 80 mark to the 100 Celcius mark, guess about 87. Took a long time to even get over the 80 mark.

I'd say both. There is no real "roar" I can hear with just the fan clutch going. There is a sound but not a "roar". Only time I hear the "roar" is when both are engaged.

Looking at the front of the clutch with my inspection mirror it seems to have a bunch of crud coating it. I suspect leaking fluid. One other test I may do is one I found on the internet. It involves using one piece of 1 inch masking tape. You tape one blade to the radiator shroud and see if it rips itself loose. No rip equals bad clutch. I'm convinced enough that it's bad to go ahead and order a new one. Good thing I have the special tools already!
