Insurance for Euros

This is suggested by the thread about the 200D .....

I have an '84 240D Euro. State Farm, my insurer for 25 years, refused coverage because of graymarket status even tho I have a plaque on the door jamb stating that the car was brought into line with Federal statutes when it was imported in '87 (I have US headlights, US gauges, and the front end was jacked up somehow -- I suspect 300D springs). I found coverage at Geico with no trouble -- except that it is at least $100 per 6 months more expensive than State Farm.

Who else has experience with Euros, and what other insurance companies could I - and others - try, looking for better rates?

My 79 isn't driven or insured right now, but the 81 euro 300d is insured through state farm. At first they were confused about the vin, I guess it didn't come up at first in the system or something, but we took the title down there and they made it work. It has been insured through them for almost a year with no problems.

I had a euro 350se under the same circumstances. State Farm insured mine no problem. Must have been a change of policy. Check Nationwide.

Thanks for the Suggestions

I'll give all those a call.

I'm pretty sure I tried Nationwide & was quoted around $600/6mos (w/out collision), but I'll try again. Most places I ask (AAA, for instance) when I say gray market or give them the VIN # say they can't help me. I wonder if it's the underwriter for State Farm for Florida that doesn't want to take the car, since others have/are using State Farm.

Another Euro gets the run around

I have 21st century
pretty good co
they insured it
then they sent me a letter to confirm vin
as DMV says that the vin they gave them doesn't match there files

I sent them a copy of title
Maybe they entered a 0 as a O or something silly like that
but hope they figure it out

Since I have a car insured w them already this is a 2nd & since I got min coverage & don't plan to drive it much the rate for the 2nd car was great..

I had the same problem with my '84 500SEL euro. I had State Farm and I had to verify my VIN with them 3 times over a 1 year period because the euro VIN is different than here in the states. The first 2 times I brought my car to their office so they could see the VIN for themselves. When they asked a third time, I told them that if they wanted to retain my business they had better come to my house to verify since they were having doubts. I even took a digital pic of their representative taking a pic of the VIN.

That car ended up getting stolen (in Detroit, go figure..) Well once again, I ended up having problems because SF said that the VIN was not correct. After going around and around I ended up settling with them.

I had The Hartford for eight years, and now I have Traveller's - neither have ever given me grief about a Euro.

Insurance

I ended up with 21st Century -- they didn't care about its being a Euro, and they gave me better coverage than I had with Geico for less than half the price.

I then switched my son there from State Farm, and his premium (which I pay) was close to half of State Farm .........

Plug: If you investigate & decide to switch & give them my name (or any other policy holder) the referring party gets a gift card - can choose from a long list. I got Land's End for referring my son.

Ed Stoddard

PS -- fz500 -- maybe your experience is why the State Farm underwriter wouldn't cover my car - I lived in Venice when I bought it -

I'm pretty shocked that state farm wouldn't cover you. I to have a 84 euro 240d and am covered by state farm. They had no issues whatsoever with my car and my payments are about $300 dollars every 6 months.
