Exhaust Manifold leak
I did a search on "cracked manifold" and came up snakeyes,
I know I have an exhaust leak at the manifold, I was wondering how common cracked exhaust manifolds are on 617 engines.

FWIW, my '84 300D (W123) developed an exhaust leak at about 280,000 miles. Like you, I suspected the worst but was surprised when I pulled it apart only to find a bad exhaust gasket. The job was a lot of work but not nearly as bad as it could have been. Mercedes use of quality fasteners manufactured from the right materials made dissasembling the 20+ year exhaust system relatively easy.

I've heard of the accordion section between the 4 runner section and the solo runner section cracking. The manifold has to come off to replace the accordion.

My old manifold had a heat crack. It didn't leak and I never knew it had any problems until I the turbo was removed.

well, thanks guys!
Now my mind is at ease knowing on only have to spend $30 on a gasket instead of $300 for a manifold I'm in the progress of eliminating (or at least attempting to) my various oil leaks, and I think I got it nailed down to a dripper from the turbo drain, and a seeping on the manifold side of the head. I 've reduced my oil consumption from 1L per 500kms to about a quarter of that....

Getting the manifolds off and replacing the gasket is cake. Just make sure you don't damage the threads on the studs that secure the manifolds in place. I installed an EGT gauge pre-turbo a few months ago and I kept putting the manifolds on and off to test things and I could see that I was starting to flatten down the threads on a couple of the studs. Luckily the bolts went back on with just a little bit of resistance but I'll probably have to address this issue if I have to take them off again.
