Diesel world speed record

The old record is 235.756 set in 1973 by I assume MB using the souped up 617 engine:). It will be interesting to see how this one does. Specs state that it puts put 150hp/liter:eek:.

Banks broke the pick-up record at 222mph.

Nope, it was set by Virgil W. Snyder in the, Thermo King Diesel Streamliner. The C111- II & III were om617's.
(In 1978, the C 111- III lined up at the start in Nardo. Once again, a diesel engine growled under the silver-painted plastic bodywork. While this engine had been derived from a production unit, it had been tuned to develop 230 hp and gave the streamlined car a top speed well over 300 km/h. With this Silver Arrow, Mercedes-Benz established nine absolute world records in the late 1970s. )

Some technical data:
Manufactured in 1978, 5-cylinder inline OM 617 A, placed before rear axle, longitudinally, standing, four-stroke diesel with pre-chamber injection, mechanically operated Bosch injection pump, turbocharger and intercooler, bore x stroke 90,9 x 92,4 mm, 2999ccm = ca. 183,2 cu in, compression 1:17,5, maximum power output 230 PS (NOT 320 PS!) = 169 kw at 4.200-4.600 revs, maximum torque 403 Nm at 3.700 revs, engine block made from grey cast iron, cylinder head made out of light alloy, detachable, 2 valves per cylinder, one overhead camshaft, driven by duplex-chain, firing order 1-2-4-5-3, one glowplug per cylinder, electrical Bosch starter, vented disc brakes front and rear, rear-wheel drive, double plate dry clutch, ZF 5-speed manual transmission with integrated axle drive, central floor shift, recirculating ball steering, length 5380 mm, width 1715 mm, height 1045 mm, car weight 1400 kg, engine weight 244 kg, one seat place, fuel tank 140 litres, top speed 325 km/h = 202 mph, ((other sources report a top speed of 327,3 kmh = 203,4 mph)), drag coefficient 0,183, another DC source says 0,195, diesel consumption was ca. 16 litres/100km = ca. 17.6 mpg UK = ca. 14.7 mpg US
Drivers were Rico Steinemann, Paul Frere, Moch and Dr. Hans Liebold.

Revised: Sorry for the confusion. The C-111 III (D) did NOT set the diesel land speed record before Virgil W. Snyder in the, Thermo King Diesel Streamliner

...as we speak.

JCB Shoots For World's Fastest Diesel Title Testing will begin at Bonneville Nationals Speed Week, which runs August 12-18, 2006. The team will make its first attempt to set a new record the following week.

1973 diesel land speed record already broke.

http://www.malloracing.com/ (check out the 1928 diesel raodster)

On August 18, 2004 at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Roy A. Lewis drove the Chassis Engineering Special C/DS #989 to an awesome speed of 292.735 mph, making it the fastest diesel in the world regardless of class or engine size. The streamliner also made passes at 275 mph and 283 mph prior to its run of 292.735 mph. Unfortunately, a shifting problem in the transmission prevented a back up run to break our previous world record, but the goal for next year is to run over 300 mph!

When they built the car, it's what was in production (75-76 300D). The 300SD didn't exist yet.
