Would it be easier to trade it in for a newer model then?

We have an E class that IIRC, listed in the mid to high 40s. Suckiest cupholders. I have seen cheaper cars with better cupholders. Not really a big deal for the in town jobs but when you do go longer distance, it becomes a PITA. There is one "canholder" and one cupholder which is flakey at best.

I made one out of an aluminum yard stick

First off, I didn't realize that so many Benz owners are not real red-blooded Americans! How can you NOT drive a car without a cup of coffee! My drive to and from work is my only "quiet time" (that is, figuratively speaking, while driving a diesel), and coffee during the morning drive is a must!

I don't have access at the moment to a digital camera, but I will describe the coffee holder. I took a cheap aluminum yard stick and cut it into pieces, bent as needed, fastened together with rivets, rounded off edges with file, etc. etc. Finally, coated it with black liquid plastic stuff (the type of stuff made for dipping tool handles). I attach this to the car using velcro...no drilling.

The thing attaches with three pieces of velcro...one about 4" long between the two center vents. One about three inches long, horizontally on the trim piece just below...this piece prevents side to side wobble. And the last one between switches on the wood trim panel just below. The top of the cup sits just below the vents.

The thing consists of a long main vertical piece bent at various points to mesh with the curve of the dash, the set back of the trim pieces, etc. At the bottom, this main piece juts out in an "L" which supports the bottom of the cup. The cross brace that prevents side to side wobble is attached midpoint, and just below it, is attached a "C" shaped band that wraps around the cup. This "C" shaped band is open at the front to accomodate a cup handle, and also allows you to bend larger or smaller to accomodate different shaped cups.

Ive used it for years...very strong and stable..never pulled away, never dropped a cup.

Mark

I don't know if you got an answer yet but here's what I did - not beiing able to bear drilling holes in my doors. I got a universal cup holder at Advance or Autozone (they all have them). It has an extra wide base as though it's meant to stay in one place no matter what. Yeah, not with my driving! Anyway, I glued velcro - the hook side - to the base of it and attached that to my floor mat. It stays perfectly and is easily within reach. I did this in my 380SEL and my 300D. Works great with no interior damage. There is a company that make very nice zebrano wood cup holders for the center console. In fact, my local MB dealer is selling them now. Let me know if you need more details, I'll try to help. Andy

[QUOTE=Shorebilly;1371074]

One of the reasons that I retired was, company got upset because I put in a 2 hour Overtime "Call Out"....every time my boss phoned to ask a question.....we were sitting in port at the time......it wasn't my boss' problem for not knowing his job, he was a good a$$ kisser.....it was my problem for wanting to be paid for my time, and knowledge!!!! (QUOTE)

One of the reasons that I retired was that if I had to work for my boss one more day, I was going to be up on his roof, either jumping or shooting!

But I digress.
I got one of those folding black plastic cupholders they sell at camping/boating stores, for 50 cents at a yard-sale. It sits, unsecured, in my 240D's center tray. If I drive gently, (easy to do in this car) it's stable enough for the trip from Subway, etc, to my next errand or back to the house. Someday I may add a couple of screws or some velcro.

Happy Motoring, Mark

Add me to the list of one-hand-driving, caffeine-addicted scofflaws. My cup of coffee is never more that an arm's length away for the good portion of the day. I wouldn't think of drinking it while stop-and-go driving or while weaving in and out of traffic, but on the highway and open stretches of road I'm enjoying my plain old coffee with a shot of cream and sugar.

This thread hits very close to home and it is indeed a problem that needs to be rectified before the wagon hits the road!

Most folks that drone on about not driving and drinking "like the motherland intended" probably have no problems changing radio stations and talking on cell phones.
It isn't much more difficult to take a swig of coffee than it is to activate a turn signal or turn on the wipers.....
Those of us who are "one" with our coffee mugs don't have to look at it to pick it up, swig and put it down.
Right?

Right?
Like walking and chewing gum (please disregard the door frame shaped dent on my forehead). Maybe we could put it in those backpack style water container that the bike riders use. Although you gotta be real careful drinking it through a straw!

Anyone have a link to docs on how to pull the armrest? I think hacking a slide-forward cupholder into the bottom of the armrest would be the way to go (at least for me, since my coffee mugs are the tall slim type that wouldn't fit beneath the armrest).

That dog won't hunt Jimmy. Not enough head room...I gotta take off my straw hat or go into the "lean to the center pimp position" and then I can't see out the rear view mirror! I don't think them German designers was to danged concearned about Texans and cowboy hats when they drew these rides.

Heck, I was 24 before I ever had a ride with A/C. The "cupholder" was a quart Mason jar full of ice tea (coffee in cold weather) stuck between your legs...neat thing about that deal was if you keep your vitals cool, the rest of you don't feel so hot!

advance auto parts has a nice double holder that fits in the area behind the shifter. it is very stable since it holds 2 cups and has a change area in the middle. I have mine sitting in the space with no fasteners and it has never tipped or even been close to tipping. I think it was around $11

Yeah you shouldn't drink coffee and drive, I would never do it. I only talk on my phone, and work on papers! Coffee is much worse!
