P = Park
R = Reverse
N = Neutral
D = Drive
S = ????
L = ????

Does anybody know what S and L really stands for?
Is S means Slow? Slope? Sport?
and L means Low?
or are they in German?

I don't have the manual in front of me, but I believe it's "slope" and "low."

I suspect that Mercedes simply copied American useage (so are Euro cars different?) for cars imported to the US of A. Since most American automatics were three-speeds and reverse, the pattern D-S-L was adopted. It is certainly interesting that M-B didn't give us four detents for the four speeds. Has anyone attempted to modify their transmission to allow separate selection of each of the four speeds?

I manually shift mine often.

Being able to use only first gear would be awesome!! You could use your MB as a tractor out in the fields pulling a hay trailer! :D :D

How does this apply to the 87 300D? Noticed everyone here is a 123-driver. Not that I ever really need it in my car, unless I were doing a big hill, but just curious. I've read the manuel and it has some instruction as to when to use the "3" and "2" options, but does anyone do it regularly?

Hit Man X 08-14-2006 11:11 PM

If you pull it to L from 3, you get second after moving... it's just like the Ford AOD.

You can start in L then upshift to 3, then back to 2 and you'll stay in 2.

pawoSD 08-14-2006 11:18 PM

its definatley the most fun to downshift to 2nd at about 28-30mph with the pedal at full throttle, its a rush! :D Far more fun than the 4-3 shift in my opinion.

gatorblue92 08-15-2006 12:12 AM

i have never done it in mine... my truck is a manual so i enjoy the luxury of not having to shift in the benz

PanzerSD 08-15-2006 12:15 AM

I shift manually, due to a BAD 2-3 and 3-4 flare. My car won't see first gear unless I have the shifter in L right off the line, then it'll shift when I move it to S .

My transmission is so messed up...Is there anything else to consider other than the dashopt, Mod. Valve, and the K#spring kits??

A rebuild? :D ;)

PanzerSD 08-15-2006 12:18 AM

yeah, Ouch, that's $3500 up here :(

Elktonjohn 08-15-2006 12:24 AM

I'm just beginning to learn about trans adjustments...but for now I just use the shifter for off-the-line as my 2-3 sometimes goes from 2-4 when I'm not expecting it...plus the 2-3 and 3-4 flares are a new experience in "WTF was that?" at least twice a day. I already did the filter and "pan fluid" replacement but no improvement. Vacuum probs??:book:

If I wait until the shift to second has been made and then move the selector back to "L," the transmission will stay in second, which is good for steep upgrades (driveways, narrow rural roads, etc.).<snip>

This is exactly the way my 83 300cd shifts. It certainly seams a bit weird, but I am making friends with it. I appreciate your explaining it much better than I could have, and I am relieved to read that this is apparently normal.:)
Oh and yup I also shift manually, sometimes. I don’t make a habit of it though because the way this trany shifts manually...it just feels clumsy to me.
