I have left rear brake pads wearing unevenly on my 300D. I'm thinking the rear calipers probably need rebuilding. Questions:

1. How do you identify which manufacturer the caliper is? (bendix/ATE) A: I just found photos with differences.
2. What special tools are required to rebuild these brake calipers?
3. If I replace the rear pair instead of rebuilding, are Bendix or ATE calipers the preferred manufacturer?

You can rebuild them yourself, but getting the pistons out and back in requires some "creativity" if you don't have the proper factory tools. If you're not "medium skilled" diy'er, I wouldn't attempt it.

Either Bendix or ATE are fine for replacements. Any differences are minor. If you go the replacement route, make sure you do both of them.

Also, make sure you change the rubber flex hoses.

If you have your original brake hoses on your car you might want to change them out first and see if your calipers are the problem. When the hoses get old the fluid does not return when you let up on the brake so your brakes can drag and wear out prematurely.
If that doesn't work Phil has rebuilt calipers which do not cost an arm and a leg. It might be a good way for you to go.
