Vacuum Pod ID---83 300CD

My A/C in my 300CD workes pretty well for the 134 that is in it. Only problem I have is when I have the selector on dash vents only, I get some air out of the defroster vents by the windshield. If I could stop the leak there, I feel the A/C would be able to more than keep the car cool. I owned a 190D once that had the same problem. I removed the dash panel and discovered a broken diaphram in the selector valve that closed the defroster vents. I replaced it and it worked great. My dash in my 300CD is perfect and has no cracks in it. This is why I am hesistant to remove it. So last night I pulled my glove box compartment out to see if I could see the diaphram. I could see a diaphram in the general location that my 190D diaphram was. It appears there is about a 3"x4" opening that allows visibility. It sits pretty much in the center of the dash. Is this the diaphram that controls the center vents?

Thats the one. If you have a MityVac you can check to see if that is your leak. I had to replace mine about a year ago. I had to remove the dash, But I wanted to replace all of mine. I have heard others say they were able to do it without removing the dash.

If you have small hands and are patient you can probably get it out without the dash removal.

Also there is a website that sells the diaphrams for the pods. It cost me about $45 to replace all of them in the car. Which is about what a new pod costs.
Here is the website.

I had heard the same about the center vent, some you can and apparently in the case of my 82 CD, i couldnt, it had screws from the front side holding it in so i had no choice but to remove the dash to get to it.
