power steering making noise- why?

Hi folks-

My '82 300SD is making a strange irregular, growling, clanking, clunking sound.
It's clearly distinct from the smooth diesel clatter, and doesn't change with RPM or turning of the wheels.

Where do I go from here? Repair or replace?

I bought the car six weeks ago; filter and fluid were changed a four weeks ago. Has new belt and hoses.

Any ideas would be appreciated
Thanks- Kevin

Janko-
I checked the owner's manual. There's nothing in it about power steering fluid levels, just what type to use.
Is ther a line in the reservoir?
Thanks for replying so soon.

yes, there is a level. perhaps a line etched in the resevour(sp?). someone here may know. but my thought is that the line corresponds to 'cold' level. i have a non-german other item. and a dipstick. a mark for cold. and for hot. this be no better than a 'dump'. we be waiting for those in the know to respond. do you have an owner's manual? yes. are you sure? or do a search on checking fluid level?

yeah, I checked my son's 123 manual, the PS systems look pretty similar.
It says the level should be higher. I'll get some ATF later on today and try it. I'll get back to you. Thanks for helping.

Follow these directions:
Flush your power steering - baby its gross in there

Automatic Transmission Fluid for transmissions. Power Steering Fluid for power steering.

OK, so I topped it off with PS fluid.
Same noise.

Has anyone out there had a pump go bad on them?
What did it sound like?

Do you replace or rebuild? Is the rebuild difficult? Any special tools required?
I get the feeling we're getting closer to the ps pump graveyard.
