1991 W126 Fan Clutch
 

Hi All,

I need to remove my fan clutch. I have done it on the older engine, but never on the newer. It seems to be bolted in by a center bolt, rather than the prior 4 bolt arrangement that mounted the clutch to the shaft.

I am not at the car and need to have all my tools ready - can anyone tell me what size nut it is or is it a special star or other pattern?

I did this a couple years ago I am pretty darn sure it was an allen head bolt.And Had to remove it with heat and ruined it,but Phil had a replacement bolt.Johnny

Do you have any idea what size? Was it standard or non-standard? Sorry for the layman questions, but to mb repair guides are offline otherwise I could look it up.

I am sure someone will post the correct size allen ,I do remember it was a metric 3/8 drive socket I used.I had no luck removing it in the car,I actually had to wrestle the waterpump off with the fan still attatched(not an easy feat) and put it in a vise and use a torch to remove the fan bolt.I hope this is not the case for you,it was not a fun job.Hopefully someone will chime in with more information,Good luck.Johnny:(

Thanks! I don't think that I will have to much trouble removing. The fan clutch was replaced 2 1/2 years ago and has given out - which I'm rather surprised about. But, it freewheels like a champ and the engine is over 100 celsius.

Usually, they are real hard to remove because they have been on for almost a decade or so.

8mm. Left is loose. Spray some PB around the area, on reinstall use some anti-seize.

Pick up a 300E (M103) fan clutch to save some of your cash for beers. It works fine. I've had mine on my SDL for a while now and since it's been 107°F+ here in Texas my temp has been holding fine.
