Where to buy an 83 300-SD exhaust downpipe w/ flex joints?
well it looks like my flexjoints on my exhaust downpipe have had it. one broke off from the downpipe the other day. I need to get the car inspected soon, and pretty much all I need at this point is a good down pipe. I did check **************, but I was unsure what was correct part was, or if they even had the right one.
anyone know where I should go to get this downpipe? the exact part that's broken is the flex joint that runs from the first exhaust pipe to the downpipe, however none of the flex joints look to be in great condition. |

As posted, The "buy parts" link above. IF you don't find the part listed, call Phil. He can get just about any Mercedes part.

I replaced the downpipe on the SD last fall when the head was rebuilt. Went through quite a struggle to find a downpipe that was bent over mandrel. This means that the diameter of the pipe remains the same at the bends. Most of the aftermarket suppliers have standard bent tubing and the diameter across the bend drops by more than 1/2". This causes a restriction in flow that might be significant.
After returning two of them, I finally tried one from the dealer. Sure enough, just like the factory original part........bent over mandrel. So, you can pay less for aftermarket.........but, be aware, there may be a difference in quality on this part. |

Ok, I need to ask a rookie ?? here...what is this flexible header pipe stuff? I just noticed that the PO has put a piece of flex pipe between the "header" ...which is just the down-pipe down to where it bends parallel to the body and was torched just after the bend...and the front extension pipe which leads to the donut junction. I get the impression that none of this is OEM but the donut...duh...but what SHOULD be there? OR, should I just take the "header" pipe-flex junk-front extension pipes to an exhaust shop and have them build me a solid one-piece from motor to donut and hope the shaking diesel does not kill the whole lot? What am I missing here...
