Thumbs up 617 lower guides?

I see that the front cover has to come off (not a biggie) but do I run the risk of hurting the headgasket upon removal?

Not sure what you mean by "front cover" on the 617.

If it has a timing chain cover, it's not a 617.

There is no cover on the OM617. It's part of the block casting.

For the inner slide rail, you need to remove the vibration damper and balancing disc, and injection timer. Then the lower bolt can be removed with a slide hammer puller.

The outer slide rail requires removal of the vacuum pump.

Note that this is from the manual..........I have not done it personally.

You got to get all down in here. This engine had 306k miles on it when it was pulled. If you look closely you can see the press pins that pull out to allow you to replace the rails.

I must have 603 on the brain from when I thought my headgasket took a crap.

If I pull the pulley and balancer, I plan to replace the front main as mine is leaking. Doesn't seem like to bad of a job

I presume that you must fish the rails up and out the top of the head??

Reinstallation with the head in place must be a real challenge.

What sort of mileage should we worry about the lowers?

Based on what I have seen I would be more concerned with the oil pump chain tensioner, spring and bushing once you get past 300k. This is the one that I see the most wear on. I thing you can inspect it with the lower oil pan off. It will be less mileage than this if the oil changes have not been done in a timely manner.

Similar manner to replace that guide? Remove most of the stuff from the front and drop the lower pan?

It looks like the upper oil pan has to come off to replace the oil pump chain tensioner and spring.
