95-97 diesels

Anything to watch out for or avoid in the 95, 96, and 97 years of 300 series diesels?
Price range?

Thanks,
Brian

Some folks have corrosion problems with the front spring perches of the W210. Mostly in cars that see road salt.

124 vs. 210

You mentioned two different models in your request. the E300D in 1995 is still the rock solid bullet proof 124. 96 was the beginning of the 210 disaster

Things to consider:

The 124 in 1995 was 10 model years into production. In classic German fashion, the vehicle was a refined and perfect automotive masterpiece. I have 2 95s and truly believe they were one of he finest examples of MB engineering and technology perfected by the R & D mentality of MB of old, and not the mass marketing knock mentality that took over to bring the 210 car to production. Frankly the 210 is a cheap imitation of the original, read the posts and talk to a MB body shop. The car is under-designed an under engineered, compared to the 124. Prior to the 210 no vehicle was ever brought to production until engineer said it was ready. Market pressure to sell more vehicles quicker brought the 210 to the market. It's also the shortest production run of any E class in history.

Second, the 96-97 is the same DOHC OM606 engine as the 95. the 98-99 is the 606 with a turbo. 42% more torque, same old POS 210 body. My 124s have no rust and I live in Chicago. I don't think the 210 can boast that.

Drive them both, but in the end, if you like the zip skip the 96-97 E300D and go with the 98-99 E300D Turbodiesel. If your willing to still drive sustained 85MPH in quiet rock-solid comfort, go with the 95 and put up with the no turbo. The only place it drags is from 50-60, otherwise, it does just fine for a non-turbo. My 87 300D Turbo, the second year of the 124, is still faster than my 95, but with all the production refinements over the years, the 95 is far nicer to drive.
