How much to replace my window?

Well maybe my searching skills aren't up to par today but I was unable to find any info. on how much it should cost to replace a driver's side window.

I walked out to my car this morning to find my window had been smashed! There's glass all over the place.

This is probably a work-related incident (I'm not getting into that here) and work will likely pay to replace it, which is good. I don't want them to get a bad deal, though, so my question: how much is reasonable for after-market glass including installation?

I have two estimates so far, one for $199 and one for $251.

Thanks in advance for sharing your experience in this matter.

WOW. If your a DIY just find a junker with a window, it takes less than 45min to swap them out. Those are some outrageous prices. I'd offer to ship you a replacement but I had to pull that one myself.

Either way sounds like its time to start carrying a gun to work.

Window

The retail price on the glass is $110.00, and the Mitchell repair book calls for 1.6 hours labor time. So the $199.00 quote doesn't sound so bad.

Local glass place told me 56 dollars carry out for tinted PPG Door Glass. DIY. Its easy. Get shop vac and clean up well first, including under the seats!

Thanks for the replies. It looks like $199 is the winner if I want it installed, as the third estimate was $232.

I guess the bottom line is I'll do it if I have to pay for it and I'll have it installed if I don't. I just moved and I really have too many things to do right now to be tinkering with the car this week.

And don't worry, people...I will NOT be driving aruond with plastic taped over the opening, which would cheapen all Mercedes everywhere.

Time to get out the shop vac...

Maybe you should bust out the passenger side so the tint will match

1.5hrs is ridiculous. All you have to do is remove interior trim, exterior trim (window seal), remove two bolts and its out.

On two of the three estimates they charge for 2 hours. On the third ($232) they don't say.

Auto Glass Specialists of Michigan came to my driveway and changed out my passenger window (I shattered it on accident... ) for $128 including labor/the glass. I probably saved a little bit since I had taken the door panel off for him ahead of time and put it back on myself. (I didn't want anything to be broken, and hoped to save a few $$ on labor...) it worked great.

Bad news....very bad

So it turns out that in addition to the window, the runner is also broken. I'm talking about the metal piece that sits vertically in the door and is welded to the door at the top and bottom. If this isn't the runner, someone please correct me. I figure this must have happened when the window broke because it worked fine before.

I took the car to a couple of places and was told it may not be fixable! It's snapped right around the area of the door handle and lock mechanism.

O, joy.

The company is still willing to take care of it, fortunately, but a new door? UGH!!!!!

I'm sure the paint will never match. I have one estimate so far for $178. They told me they may not be able to actually do it, though, and that they would know pretty quickly once they started the work.

This has wound up being much more of a pita than I thought it would be.

I re-did all the windows in one of my 300D's. I'm thinking that the piece your referring to isn't welded. I did the work a while ago, but I think it actually bolts in. I could be wrong though. I'm working on the vacuum locks on my 240D this weekend and I'll have a look while I'm in there.

No, I just looked at it again, definitely welded. Thanks for trying, though. Maybe itwould be easier just to take the whole piece off and weld a new one on; that way I wouldn't have to worry about it being sanded down correctly so the window can still glide over it. But then I'm not sure how easy/hard it would be to remove the runner. The bottom part has easy access but the handle would probably have to be removed for the top. That's no biggie because it will have to be removed anyway.

There's one positive here - it's the dry season. This would have been worse if it were December.
