Wicked Funny Story!

I was so proud of myself! Kinda new at all this diesel stuff - but I'm workin it out. So today was the day to do my first diesel purge on the old '80 300SD. Everything went fine. Then changed out the 2 fuel filters - still fine. Take it out for a drive - very responsive, and I'm beginning to think I really am the cat's ass. Get out a manual to trace down a disconnected green vacuum line going into the firewall, get a little sidetracked and think about removing the instrument cluster to see if the dimmer is hosed and that's why I have no instrument lights at night. Pull out the cluster - very nice, reach in back disconnect everything and out comes the cluster - perfect! I'm sitting in the drivers seat with this thing in my hand looking at the backside of it, look into the new hole in the dash to see whats back there - checking it all out. Then the idea comes into my head "Hmm, wonder if it'll start without the cluster?" I ponder it for a minute, think it probably will so I turn the key. Yup it starts all right. I'm sitting there in wonderment at how nice it idles now that I've done the purge when all of a sudden I get BLASTED with engine oil shooting right out of that damned black hole I just created. As it turns out, one of the items I disconnected was the oil pressure cable and when theres no gauge attached it shoots oil like water out of a daisy on Curly's lapel. What a stooge! I have indeed been humbled!

Anyone know how to get used motor oil out of carpet?

Bert - NH

Use Brake Clean. I have done tons of stupid stuff like that over the years and that stuff works best. It also works to mask the smell of spilled beer in a customers car!

that is great... when my mechanic took out my instrument panel he showed me how to also hold the nut on the instrument panel so it doesn't kink and break later- I believe you need a 10 and 13 mm. And yes, at least it wasn't hot.

Lol. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who's done that, only I put the cluster all the way back in place without hooking it up. I started it, and let it idle for a few minutes. It drained down the kick panel so it wasn't immediately visable. When I came back, I had a whole lot on my floor! Paper towels and Dawn did the trick.

and the information. I've never had a diesel before, but that may change in the next week or so. I can easily see myself doing something like that. Thanks for saving me from that. I'm sure I'll eventually do something as embarassing as that.

In my vast vault of experience & technical knowledge ... I know someone who knows someone who ...
New garage.
Driveway just finshed. 5% slope to the garage apron.
He removed the driveshaft parking brake on some fine 50's era beast. Somehow he removed the wheel chuck, running fast, jammed my steel toe boot behind the rear tire just as the bumper touched the new garage. No damage, except all his neighbors driving by, not stoping of course, while traped by his foot/wheel ...
A better author would lament, comtemplating the meaning of life, ... he couldn't even reach his just opened beer!!!!!!!!!!
I won't tell how long his life passed in front of his watery eyes.
He did not find religion or the meaning of life and yes, now there are wood blocks around the drive when tinkering.

The Meaning Of Bad Management & Not Thinking Ahead
Given: Hungry Grizzly Bears stalking 10 hikers walking in line. Who is the safest? #2 from the rear. You turn around and punch out the last hiker. Problem: Now you are last in line.

Reminds me of when I changed the dual fuel pumps. Took the first one out, got a couple of drops of gasoline. Took the second one out, got a couple of gallons of gasoline
