how much should I pay for a parts car?

I know a guy who's selling an 83 300 SD as a whole parts car and wants me to make an offer. I have an 84 300 D, and right now I need a replacement speedometer/odometer, though if his seats are as good as he says they are, I could stand to swap mine out. The body panels are the wrong color, but I figure I can part the rest of the car out to people who need stuff. What do you think is a fair price for me to pay for a parts car? I'd also have to pay to get it towed back to my place (minimum $100), as there's no title for it. Granted, I haven't seen the thing yet, but I just wanted to get an idea of the max I should offer. I was thinking $500. Too low?

depending on what you need 200-800. I paid 600 for a 78 300D, it was rusty but had a brand new climate control servo and exhaust.

$700 is the highest I'd consider for a good running parts car. If it's got a truly dead engine, $400 is all I'd pay.

I paid $600 for my 240D with a bad engine, but it was in too good a condition (IMHO) to be a parts car. He basicly said, "Get it off my lot tonight or it's going to the crusher."

Add up the value of the usable parts that you will get in the deal. The ones that you actually need now. Others may need something you can't use. Consider your time involve in pulling and shipping the parts if you decide you might offer parts to others.
The fact that ther's no title may make it tough to get rid of the carcass when its all picked over. Most scrap yards here require a title otherwise, you will have to cut the car up to dispose or it.
Another thing to consider is your local ordinance, neighbors... about having a "junk" vehicle on the property.
You may be better off finding the only parts you need. You can buy a lot of parts for $500.

Of the 2 I've bought, I paid $500 for my 300TD (delivered and carcass picked up for free) and $400 for my 300D (with title) hit in the rear +$65 for a tow dolly that I used to get it home. Be careful of no title- most junkyards need the title to accept it!

Cut it in half... it's no longer a car at that point, it's scrap metal

Yall are paying a whole lot more than I would for a parts car. Of course, I favor the cheap side of things simply due to necessity.....
The interior parts of an SD are gonna do you little good on a D, so remember that.

I was feeling poorly for the deal I got on "Scar". I guess I shouldn't feel too bad.......

BTW, I don't think an offer of $500 bucks is too low. I think it's too high...

Careful of the no title

Sure you can cut it up and get rid of it. This was very theraputic helping a brother cut up a totally gutted, rusty and wrecked '69 Mustang and literally putting it in the back of a pickup.

However, there's a lot more metal to cut through and weight with a MB.

I could use the engine/transmission if its in good running condition but, the shipping might be more than I could afford.
Where's it located?

None of those parts will swap between a 300SD and 300D. The speedo/odo are electronic vs mechanical and the seats are bigger in the SD.

I paid $400 for a parts car with what looked like a fuel system problem a very cracked dash and no rust. Then the engine seized and I couldn’t bear seeing it go to the crusher. Now it's getting an engine upgrade with lots of help from ForcedInduction. The wife is not pleased.

I spent 1120+pickup time for mine... but I got a title, and a running vehicle with minor dents in the rear...

That doesn't sound like a parts car, did you repair it?
