My 85 300D has a glove box light. I'm not sure about the 78 though. My 79 300SD does not, but there seems to be a spot for the same type. My 78 parts car does have the light.

I'd like to have the tunk light work anytime the trunk is open. Not just when the marker lights are on.

I like the manual climate controls in the 240D for short trips because it responds immediately. However, I actually prefer the auto climate control in the 300D because I use it for long highway trips. I just leave it set on about 20C all the time and it works perfectly. If I drive the 240D long distances, I get sick of tweaking the manual controls every time the outside temperature changes. Personally, I think the climate controls are appropriate for each car.

Two questions -

1) Is the ALDA the same thing as the fuel injection pump? I understand that this is a critical area in terms of whether or not the car performs the way it should - had mine adjusted (I think) and its been running great ever since.

2) What did you have to do to get your climate control to respond correctly? I have to put mine all the way to the cold setting to get any A/C at all. That and my center dash vents are permanently closed shut. I replaced the CCU unit a while back with a rebuilt one from Programma. Any other suggestions?

Thanks

PS: And yeah, I agree the sun visors suck. It didn't take GM, Ford, or hell, even Fiat that long to figure out how to make a good set of sun visors. And yes, the vacuum system is questionable: I see some benefit, but not when it comes to hunting forever for a tiny a vaccum leak.

1. The ALDA is the round piece on top of the injection pump. It has a sensing line from the intake manifold and it is designed to adjust the fuel flow in response to turbo boost. There is an adjustment screw on top that will control the amount of fuel the engine gets at low rpm. Turning the screw CCW results in more fuel, more power, and potentially more smoke. If it's running well, with decent low rpm power, leave it as-is.

2. I also installed a rebuilt CCU (from GDL) and my system works well:

These guys are pretty helpful if you give them a call. They can probably tell you where to start looking.

If the center vents do not open, you may also have a problem with the vacuum controls or vacuum pods that operate those vents. Try doing a search on "center vents" in this forum.

thanks

Yeah, that's probably what they adjusted - my car has decent low and mid range power - way better than it was when I first got it.

With regard to the center vents, that's what I'm finding out is the vacuum pod is probably shot - they say its the hardest one to get to, as well. [Aint that always the case??]

Ever replaced one of them before?

Wow this is more response then I expected. I think I agree with just about ever one of your "complaints" as well. But overall its a great car.

Not a flaw I'd say but an oddity... the ride height... is like 4x4 high. So much ground clearance you could go off roading...plus I have never gotten the suspension to bottom out, I'm sure it would be just as good and handle better an inch shorter.

The seats just aren't comfortable.

The air conditioner(it cools to 49 degrees-- it is working properly) is weak.

A lack of 'dummie' lights. There are provisions for extra lights in the diesel cars; I'd like a low oil light and maybe a low washer fluid light. Door ajar might be a good one as well.

Stereo placement is the least ergonomic I've ever experienced. Cell phone chargers have to be unplugged to get to the volume and track fwd/rev buttons/knobs. The upper switch panel could have been used for the radio and the radio space could have been used for misc. switches. Stereo performance is also not adequate for a diesel engined car.

The ashtray should be ashamed to be found in a German vehicle. VW knows how to make an ashtray that fits a carton's worth of butts-- At least make it hold enough to empty it only at fuel stops, damn! It is NOT cool to have to stop just to empty the ashtray.

The least durable seat pockets ever installed in a car.

Poor sunvisor design-- lifted directly from a VW, in cars costing 3x as much, no less!

NVH levels that can rattle dentalwork loose. Comparable year-model domestics are FAR more refined. Cavaliers, even!

My turn...look for my forthcoming "Things I love about my w123" I think that thread will be equally, if not more, successful than this one.

AMEN, brother!

I will gladly deal with the bad of my W123's over the bad of my W210 any day.
