Clock and Tach removal.
 
'80 300SD/W116. I have to replace the clock. I got the clock/tach assembly out of the console but I have to remove the tach needle to remove the clock. I can't figure how to remove the tach needle and I don't want to force it and possibly break it.

Has anyone done the above? If so how did U remove the tach needle?

Hopefully the dash cluster in a 116 is similar to 126. Make sure you make an alignmant mark before you remove the needle so you know the position it goes back. Picture below non MB but you should get the idea.

I've done my speedo just like that several times without breaking anything. I assume the tach is similar. Nice steady pressure on both sides.

Is there a particular reason you want to dissect the thing? Used ones are usually pretty affordable... Wouldn't it be easier to replace the whole clock/tach assembly with another one?....

Mike,

I think I will replace the entire clock/tach assembly as U suggested since I have one from my parts car. What changed my mind was that even though I removed the 3 screws holding the clock assembly, the clock was not loose. There seems to be something soldered on the back plate that must be removed to get the clock out.

PS, Thanks to all U other guys for your suggestions for removing the tach pointer. I think it helped others.
