Yeah, insurance on that car shouldn't be nearly that much. I'm 19 and I got liability only insurance on my 81 300sd for like $30 a month. It was added onto my parents insurance policy too. I'd shop around for something cheaper.

I'm not an insurance specalist, but
If you are talking just liability insurance I don't think the make or model of the vehicle make much difference. I think it (the rate quoted) is based almost entirely on age and gender. And a 17 year old male is probably as bad as it can get, unless a person has a record of DUI driving. I don't think a three year old Mazda 323 or Saturn sedan will get you a better rate.

My car is on AAA insurance. So far in almost 4 years of driving, I've had no accidents and I've never been pulled over, so that probably helps keep the price down.

Hmm
Keep it! I have a 76 300D myself. I have found my transmission shifted like crap because the metal linkages on top of the engine needed to be tightened up. The one directly over the valve cover the faces towards drivers side fender would constantly unscrew and I would slowly get weird shifting. If I remember correctly, I think someone told me that these transmissions are not vacuum modulated, only in the W123's which use a different tranny. The W115 is a great chassis. Get the rust fixed, slap a Maaco paint job on it for now and drive it until you have more money to fix it up. For whatever reason I have a feeling these cars will be like the fintails and pontons in another 10 years or so: The forgotten, old design MB's. The W123 looks so much more modern than the W115: and thats why I love the W115.
Beautiful car BTW. Love the interior and exterior color. Hell I'd pay 1k for that thing in a heartbeat.

expensive insurance
have you got this thing titled in your name or your mothers ? i have titled my 17 year olds in my name with me named as driver. he is automatically covered on anything he drives that i own or anyone else owns. if it was in his name it would be expensive like yours is, now its only 37 $ a month anad listed and licensed as a collector car. in wisconsin we can drive a collector car 11 months a year after buying this plate. the 12th month requires a $30 temporary plate. weierd huh ? anyway have your mom check with her agent about different ways to cover the car. we have american family for everything including home owners so there is a discount but we do insure about 7 cars. . . . try it ! and as sosmesone else said in a prior post, keep the D$@# car. you can't find anything as good for what you'd get for it.

yeah... My transmission shifts pretty hard also... Jerks you back in the seat on a WOT 1-2 shift (only time the car has that ability ) I changed the transmission fluid&filter, and it didnt do anything but cause me aggravation, and a transmission fluid leak (didnt use RTV on the gasket )
I'm not sure it's vaccume modulated, but I doubt it... Mine shifted the same when I needed to make an emergancy run to my uncles (long story), as I was trying to fix my vaccume locks. Brakes were tough, but I had to go It shifts hard, that's good for it (less clutch slipage between shifts=less wear) Keep driving it, do NOT get a macco paint job, except mabey on the hood ONLY (do the prep work yourself, and mask everything off perfectly) they SUCK at painting cars... you will do it again in two years... Spraying a car is easy/cheap, prep work takes time and $kill. If I didnt care how mine looked, I'd drive it to school... you need a new defrost knob, and I THINK I can get you one from a junkyard (i'll look, after it's done raining) Any other parts u need that arent year/model specific? It's not the same car, but I think they've got the same knob ~Nate

hmmmm from what said here, ill probably end up keeping thecar
im still open to suggestions???? reiterate, ac doesnt work (got at auction, no real info on car) i dont believe ac is seized as compressor spins freely, but no belt on it, so to keep from gettin hopes up belive it doesnt work antenna doesnt work rear window heater, have to hold switch out for it to work, if let go it goes back to neutral position with light out cruise control goes in and out, but dont really care about that transmission shifts kinda hard, but not too much vacuum locks dont work hmmm i think thats everything wrong with it- i like this car, but id really like an 80's model wagon i would really like to get everything on this car fixed, but im really hoping that nothing major goes wrong. im also not very proficient at working on cars. this is my very first car (purchased in may) i did figure out how to change the fuel/air filters, and will be attempting oil change on saturday) i would really like to get everything on this car fixed and make it a true "classic" but itll take some time makin only 700/month, with 150/month going to insurance and 80/month going to gas (despite gas being 3 dollars/gallon here (lex, ky) i only need about 20 dollars diesel a week hehe) ive been wanting to do the pool noodle thing to the front seats (have done to the backs of the front seats) but i despite all i try, i cant get the bolts that hold the seats to the car to move whooh that was a mouthfull

oh yeah, my grandfather berated me on buying this car. i didnt even look at it before buying it, said i needed a newer car (honda or toyota) should have gotten something easier to get fixed, etc, etc
if it wasent for him i wouldnt have even gotten this car. he was supose to sell me his old 80 ford monarch for 150. said he'd get it out when he got a battery. i said i would get it, and he said no he would, id been waiting i asked him almost every time i saw him if he got a battery and he would say he'd get it soon. (well this was when i first got my license) wellllll 2 years later i was still waiting for him to get that battery.......... this car was for sell at a sealed auction, starting bid 400, i bid 701.99 (all the money i had at the time) despite what he says he loves workin on engines and tinking with mechanical stuff, he's the one that fixed my dash lights (non working when i got the car) and fixed my windshield wiper fluid line, he spent about 2 hours on the dash lights he'll only take his cars to the shop when it is absolutly something he can't do himself

However, there WILL be a lever running from the throttle linkage in the valve cover/injection pump area to the tranny, and if that is out of adjustment, it can cause shifting problems. Mike

Maaco
To be honest with you, if you take off all the trim yourself (which is extremely easy) a Maaco job doesn't look half bad. The 249 deal they have is decent, and if it lasts and looks decent for two years, its done it's job and you can get a better one. If you do the masking yourself, they don't do an AWFUL job. Their bodywork sucks too, but if they simply have to spray the car, they don't do a bad job. Think about it: they are probably the largest paintshop in the US, all their places have the big, climate controlled spray booths (all that I have seen) and they offer a warranty (4 years on their $549 paintjob) Find someone who will give you a warranty on their paintjob for 549? After four years, if the car is still running nice, and you have some funds, send it in for a really good paintjob.
