Considering the sale of my diesel

I am giving some serious consideration to selling my '83 300D. I like the car, but maintnence and repairs are killing me....

The W123 chassis is a great chassis, and the diesels are great engines, but unfortunately, I can really no longer afford to maintain and repair this thing...

I am kinda guaging interest in the car. I would like to get another Mercedes, preferably a gas one....

Im still kinda undecided though.....

How many miles?

How many miles does it have on it and what kind (major) of problems have you had with it?

you can drive that car forever if you maintain it correctly... What's not working in it?

Does it have the dreaded ACC???

Car is Hell Beige (hell being German for bright) with Palomino interior.
265,000 miles on the clock, but I know its much more than that because the odometer hasnt worked since I got the car over 3 years ago.

Needs front end alignment. needs new front tires, needs a valve adjustment.

Damage on left rear tail light

IP needs work.... the Idle adjustment screw popped off causing the throttle linkage to go limp. I taped a screwdriver under the stop lever to prop the linkage back up th keed the car running. Runs wonderfully as long as I have spare tape in the trunk... lol....

It has a new thermostat. New water pump. New primer pump(yet to be installed), I have a spare voltage regulator. I just installed a new battery yesterday. New fuel filters have been put on about 1000 miles ago.

Chassis is still rock solid.

This car has been my daily driver for the past 3 years, and its been a great car. I just havent maintained it like I should have. I never had the money to do so..... I would like to see it go to someone here because I know the members here would get it back into the condition it needs to be in....

If I do sell it, I would like to get enough money so I can go and buy another car......

...and you think an unknown, untested gasser will be more reliable?

Essentially, Im looking for something that would possibly be cheaper to maintain, and that doesnt need alot of work done to it.

It sounds like maybe you are stuck in *that* place.

Wherever you can't get out of the car unless you do one of two things: 1) sell the car for it's real value, losing money in the process. or 2) pumping money into it to help it fetch a better price.

Your car sounds like it may be in the 1-1.5k range if the interior and driveline are in top shape-- won't buy you much of another car, will it? Is the air-conditioner working? Tires and suspension?

I think this situation presents itself quite often whenever people that can't really afford a Mercedes-Benz try to-- they often have to take a loss on top of everything else. I'm in the same boat, but am lucky enough to have a good reliable car to drive while the Mercedes sits waiting for it's repairs.

Good luck finding your way out from under it! I know it can be very unsettling to be in this situation.

M103s are very robust and long-lived engines, easy to work on too. If you got one that was maintained, it would be as good to you as your diesel was. I'd say look for a 90-92 E-Class or 190E 2.6. They have problems with needing head gaskets and valve jobs though. Which leads me to ask one question- since you admit you haven't maintained your diesel, what makes you think a gas car will be better? You'll have to maintain it too. How much are you going to ask for your poorly maintained car?

I dont know how much I would ask for it.

I have misrepresented the lack of maintenence..... It hasnt been maintained as well as alot of you guys maintain your cars.

I have kept up with fluid and filter changes. I have replaced parts that have failed like the water pump and thermostat. I just dont want anyone to think that this car has been absolutely neglected. She does need some work though...

Good looking, non rusty, well kept engine and systems, kinda W123s are around, but you have to pay top bucks and if you dont keep up on maintenance its going to be a "disaster" of small jobs to bring it back. A Camray or Sub might be a good choice. My wife has a Toyota van, I never do anything to it (well not much anyway) Just drive it

You know what will happen if you admit that. Say you put it on Craigslist, with a lil blurb about the condition. You will get a relentless groundswell of tire kickers, none of whom will offer more than $500. If you eBay it, won't get much over $1500, running the risk of deadbeats, scammers, etc. Put a for sale sign in the window and you'll still be driving it in a year.
I think, and this is my opinion only- get yourself some cash and fix the damn thing. If it ain't got no rust(I got a GA car and it ain't got no rust)and the engine's all good which sounds like it is, why not just keep it and fix it. I mean really now. Seems to me if you have a job all the things you say are wrong with it can be dealt with easily. Nothing you cited is an expensive major repair.
