Which model of engine is this?

Hello everyone!

I decided to sell my 82 300D Euro to buy a 85 500 SL which has a blown engine to install a diesel in it. After some research I decided I want a diesel engine like the ones the Fins use.

Which engine model is this?

Which transmission are they using that can stand so much power?

Thanks guys!

That's their "typical" setup using a 606 and a Holset turbo.

Thanks Brian.

What about the tranny? Are they using a mercedes tranny? I mean, that must be a tough tranny to stand that whole bunch of ponnies the engine throws

I'm not sure of what they do to beef up the tranny. It's definitely a standard tranny but it's got a bunch of upgrades to let it survive.

Alternatively and probably easier to find in the USA you could look for 602 and 603 engines from the late 80 W124, W210 and 126 diesel. The 617 will not fit vertically in the SL. I am not sure with later engines.

i would not see why the 617 wouldnt fit. a 110 will and it is just as tall as a 617.

imho

The valve cover of a 617 is too tall for the low profile of the SL hood. If you made fit a M110 the mounting arms must have been machined to make the engine hang very low in the engine bay. V8's dont have the problem. I still have to see in person a 617 or for that matter any inline diesel in a SL. That would be a really neat ride. 5 or 6 cylinder diesel SL...

I agree with you, a turbo diesel SL would be an awesome ride. Anyway what I'm looking for is somewhere to put a big diesel engine in and awake the engine like the finns do. Well not as much as they do....

How about a 300E 4Matic? Will it be possible to remove the gas engine and put a 6 cyl diesel engine coupled with the 4Matic tranny? Now, that would be one hell of a ride! A powerful 4WD Diesel Mercedes!!

I agree. After getting my 603-engined W126 on the road and experiencing how it performs, a diesel SL would be some fun!
