Here is the tool
Sorry, didn't mean to leave you hanging. Since I work for Audi Porsche Mercedes dealer in town I went to our MB Service department and asked them for a bushing removal tool. They didn't have one (??) and told me to create a tool. We used a chizle and sort of punded them out which worked. Going back in, we just hammered on them until they looked even and everything worked fine!! I guess the tool should look like the link below. I was in too much hurry to get this noise straitened out and couldn't wait enough to order the tool and wait for the part.

An alternative to the special tool is 3/4" dr. sockets, 5/16" all-thread, and lots of washers. I've removed/replaced all of the large suspension bushings with such a set up.

Hello,
Could this problem also make a rattling noise? I have the clunk noise during a hard shift but I also have a rattle under the car when going over bumpy roads. Thanks, Jay

Well, I don't have a clunk coming from my rear end during shifting but I do have a clunk and some grinding from a stop.
Everybody is saying that these diffs don't go bad but I doubt mine is bushing related. There seems to be physical movement within my diff as if something like a bearing has failed causing something to be off-center. I also measured play with the rear driven up on ramps and the car in neutral. I could move the drive shaft back and forth about 20 degrees. I bought a replacement diff but I haven't put it on yet. I checked it for slack and there doesn't appear to be any off the car. It came from a '92 300D with 160K miles on it. Mine has 230K and for at least 10K miles had very harsh shifting due to a vacuum leak in the emission control system. I suspect that it was in this condition for quite a while before I had it. I put 10K on it in this condition. I suspect that a long period of harsh shifting could have caused premature wear in my diff but that is a very un-educated guess as I'm not that familiar with the inner workings thereof. I read a thread on here from a guy who had a W123 that shifted very harshly and it caused something pretty in his diff to become very damaged.

My 81 stick has a rotary howl/vibe as speed increases from 30 to 55 where it peaks.
Flex discs ok, new ctr bearing and carrier, minimal DS slop, fresh diff lube. I believe it is the diff but have done no more investigation. It will be parked come snow season so I will check deeper then. In the meantime I just drive it. If it breaks then, at least I will know whats up.
