IP "buzzing" sound, OM 617...........?????
Just as I sort out one thing I get another project. Fun fun fun..Anyway just recently I have been getting a buzzing sound coming from the IP while running, and usually continuing for a half a dozen seconds after shutoff. Could this possibly be caused by a leak where it connects to the rails or am I looking at buying another pump?

Might help if you IDd the car.

Sorry, I've asked so many questions I guess subconciously I thought everyone knew it by now..Ha..HA. Anyway It's a 1982 300SD , and there seems to be no side effects. Just a sudden wining buzzing noise coming from the injection pump.

Try running a lubrication additive to the fuel or something, like Redline diesel catalyst or Marvel Mystery Oil. Might not make any difference, but who knows, the stuff is only a few $$ a bottle.
|
Also, :D Try pressing down on the air cleaner housing when its idling and see if the "buzzing" sound goes away, if it does, then it could be a bad rubber mount for the air cleaner or a broken air cleaner bracket banging/vibrating against itself. We had that happen/make a noise like that on our 1983 300SD...turned out part of the bracket had broken.

I doubt it needs lubricating.I run Veggie oil. And the noise is defenitly coming from the IP. But Thanks.

Helpful information
I have tracked down the sound to being linked with the white mechanism to the right of the ALDA. If I disconnect the green thing from it the sound disappears, in fact If I disconnect any of the lines ie.( to the tranny , or at the top of the engine on that black think) the sound goes and comes back immediatly upon it's reconnection.Any thoughts? And also, can anyone tell me what this part is called and does? Could disconnectiong the Alda recently be related?

You talking about this thing? If so, that is the Injection Pump Vacuum Valve. Funny, I have the same buzzing coming from mine and was just looking up a price for replacement. $200. Ouch. |
You are trying to fix something that is operating normally. Changing the air in your tires would be a more worthwhile endeavor.

how long
Has it affected the operation of the pump any?How long has yours been doing this?Maybe its not a big deal.

The "white thing" is the vacuum control valve for the transmission. It reduces the vacuum level by leaking. The higher the "throttle" position,l the greater the leak. The valve has nothing to do with the IP, it is located there because it needs to be connected to the accelerator linkage. The buzzing sound is normal. It continues after engine shutdown because of residual vacuum in the system. The "green thing" is nothing but a damper to eliminate rapid vacuum changes to the transmission modulator.

Thanks Tango, I guess my vacuum has increased for whatever reason. Good news if anything.
