Where is the oil filter on my 1988 300D? Is it a standard cartridge type?

The oil filter is accessed from the top of the engine. It sits directly behind the engine, slightly to the right. Do NOT use aftermarket (read cheap) filters. OEM filters include Knecht, Mann, among others. These filters are high flow filters specifically designed to capture soot particles.

I was very surprised to find the
last Bosch oil filter I purchased
stamped "made in india!" It looks
identical to the Purolator brand.

I will stick with Hengst, Mann,
or Knecht in the future.

William Rogers,

I do not know who makes NAPA filter, but then again, I've not had a need to check because I've never used them. However, I would stay away from them and stick with OEM filters. OEM filters are designed to be high flow and have bypass filters built into them which capture soot particles down to 2-3 micron.

NAPA's filters are made by WIX. WIX filters are built a hell of alot better then FRAMs. I once cut open a Fram filter, only to find that the filter ends were thin cardboard and the "spring" was just a piece of stamped aluminum, absolute garbage. Whereas a WIX spin-on filter has an actual metal coil spring in it. Of course this type of filter doesn't pretain to my diesel, but for my past gas engines I used WIX. When I first bought my car I did the first oil change using a WIX filter. It came with a new rubber gasket, but no washer for the drain plug. I paid $13 for it. Now bear in mind I was not aware of this wonderful website at the time, where I can get OEM filters for $7. Also, I wanted to do an oil change ASAP so that I could establish a base line. Now of course I stick with MANN or Hengst.

You can mailorder OEM filters for less than $7 from Randy Steele - http://www.epsparts.com. He is in Santa Barbara, CA. For those of you on the East coast, try Rusty Cullens - http://www.rustyparts.net.

Both of them offer great service and have exceptional knowledge. To avoid getting bitten by shipping costs, order a bunch at a time.

Chris,

Mercedesshop.com sells lots of parts (with 3 choices of oil filters) at very reasonable prices. For the amount of invaluable information that we receive on this forum more than pays for the difference in cost that any other website that may be selling cheaper.

I do believe that we should try to buy our parts from Mercedesshop since we get expert advice from the techs and from others that may have had the same problem we are trying to solve.
