Nakamichi HU Cutting Out

I posted this over in Car Audio, but I thought I'd post it here too, since there's a great deal more traffic.

Installed a nice new Nak head unit with 4 amplifiers. Sounds great...as long as I'm not going anywhere. If I'm idling, no problem, but as soon as I put it in reverse or drive, it starts turning off and on. I tested the constant voltage lead while driving and it's fine...no loss of power. I also made sure my ground was solid and the ACC connection was sound.

Very frustrating, as I'd like to take a road trip soon. Anyone heard of this before?

Just a guess, but do you have any wires running under the console where they could be pinched by the shifter linkage?

A distinct possibility since the wiring under there is somewhat of a disaster. Good suggestion, I'll check it tomorrow. Thanks.

After checking this morning, I don't think that's the cause. But here's another clue: even if I put it in neutral (car running) and let it roll on a small slope, it still cuts out. Next thing to try is to see what happens when it rolls in neutral and the engine is off...

maybe the static suppressors in the hubs are missing?

I don't think they do anything but conduct voltage to the brake pad wear sensors, but they might. and your sensors could be worn down, causing problems if there is a mis wire under the dash.

Personally, I would just run a new +12 volt wire to the radio.

Yeah, I may try that, but the existing power lead shows no signs of voltage loss or anything when I'm rolling. So it makes me suspicious of other things like the ACC lead...could it be related to that?

vstech's suggestion is also intriguing.

Okay, I'm a dummy. I had the wrong lead for the ACC connection. But in my defense, I got the information (color code) from this site!
