If I owned a 606 I'd be reaming it every year or 18 months. Having seen a GP break off on two occasions in these new fangled engines, its an accident waiting to happen!

Wouldn't anti-seize help on the glowplugs? What makes the 606 plugs special that makes them stick?

Its not the threads that seize. The glow plug eliment is very long and carbon builds up around it. Thats why the reamer is important.

Didn't MB use the 603 and 606 in the Sprinter vans?

I am also interested in what was improved from OM617 to OM 60x and beyond... I don't think the thread starter was trying to compare one engine to another other than to find out what changed (and improved efficiency/hp)
From the 617 to the 603, didnt the change the shape/size of the prechambers ? Did Injection pressures remain constant throughout ? Didnt the injectors change between the 617 and the 603's ? Bore x Stroke ratio changes ? did they change this ? If you can answer these, I'll try to find more =) -John

They use the OM612 (2.7L, I-5, CDI) in the sprinters. I hear they will use the 3.2 V6 CDI in the 07 models.
I know there are gobs of engine choices in europe, but only the one CDI over here. |

It was a 2.9 liter version of the old 2.5 we're familiar with. It utilized direct injection, although Mercedes took a step back from the 606 and went back in time to the 2-valve per cylinder head, for some reason. Different valve cover and intake manifold, too. Hard to find information about Euro models. Likely earlier versions have the 603/606 engine.
