where to get the tool to take out precombustion chambers sdl?

a couple of them exploded because the owner of the car put gasoline in it or so. anyway, they are pretty hard to get out without the special tool... even a pneumatic chisel didn't do the trick. I don't want to go as far as welding a socket to the darn things

They are pretty hard to get out with the special tool. Try the Tools forum. Someone might have one for rent.

Be aware that most of the home made tool threads on here revolve around the head being off the car. When I did mine I had to figure out a way to do it with the head on the car. If you want the details of how I did it PM me and Ill explain it. Unless the head is off in which case the job is tons easier.

I've been getting most of my MB-specific tools from this place: http://stores.ebay.com/EL-PASO-TOOL

Picked up both the pre-combustion chamber retaining ring tool ($87) and the tool to pull and seat the chamber ($35). Very nice quality and fair pricing. I had originally made my own tool for the retaining ring, but with four of these engines to care for now I figured it best to have the proper tools.

Dave, that looks like a slide hammer tool. Is there such thing as a prechamber puller that works similar to a pulley puller? Is the head strong enough to take the counterforce of such a method?

Yep, it's a slide hammer, which is what the factory tool is. I have never seen a puller like you describe for the prechambers. The slide hammer works pretty well, although it takes a number of hits on an old prechamber. After I cleaned mine up, they dropped into a new head with no force needed (didn't have to be pressed, or even tapped, into place). The item pictured above is hand made by a machine shop in SoCal with top quality tool steel - nice stuff. I've got one each I'm keeping, those are my extra set that I'd like to get out of my garage, lol...

I guess I'm not really getting it here. these precombustionchambers look like the can be taken out with a socket like tool. just turn them conterclockwise? we didn't get to it yet, and the tool hasn't arrived.. what's the deal with the little hammer? is there no thread that holds them?

The prechamber is held in place by a lockring. You can pretty much remove the lockring with a hammer and screwdriver but I don't know if it's reusable after that. Then you use the slide hammer to pull the prechamber.

Here's a photo of the prechambers and lock rings removed from the head. These are "vertical" injection, used up through 1987 on most OM60x engines.

I'll bet you're glad you didn't try to rip out the lockrings with the slide hammer
