W116: Check your throttle linkage
For a while my wife's diesel has been a little slower than I though it should be. I assumed it was the injectors. The other day I notived that the rubber peice in the throttle linkage was completely gone: the car couldn't get past ~80% throttle.
The part I am talking about is the part with the red sticker that says "stop" on it. Their is another metal plate connected to it with rubber. In good shape, this piece lets your foot feel when you are at full throttle without hitting the kickdown button. Anyway, $61 spent at the dealer and it feels like a different car. EDIT- And it didn't take more than 5 minutes to replace. |

Tabor,
That same part failed in my beater 300SD but the car wouldn't go at all. I Rube Goleberged it back together with a piece of solid copper wire I had in the car. I had a spare part because the one in my good 300SD looked old and cracked so I replaced it. I bought that part at dealer a long time ago and it wasn't even close to $61. I wonder if contact cement would hold the broken part together. P E H |

I know people who have had good luck making custom parts out of polyurethane. You buy a tube of it and put it in a mold and then it sets up. I think I could repair my old part in this manner and have a spare in case it brakes again.

I drilled a hole in the ends and threaded bolts through it.
we don't need no stinkin' rubber!

I thought about this, but I thought the rubber was there to add enough slop to get the pedal to the kickdown switch. I guess their might be enough slop elsewhere.

That isn't where it is at on my wife's car. I don't have a picture handy.

This isn't it, but the parallel culprit in the W123:

It's the linkage bushing that provides support for.. all of it. Without it, the engine is very very laggy. Note that the original part is a yellow waxy substance- aging nylon. I replaced it with a HDPE part that I made on the lathe. Note that the stock part includes a hub protusion to keep the linkage from sliding in and out- I omitted that(hard to make) and used a $.62 8mm shaft collar to do a better job. Again, that is for the 123, not the 116.

Tabor,
Its not there on any of my 3 116 MBs. The pik looks like a 126 with a 617 engine. P E H |

Tabor,
The 617 engine in the W116 does not have the things on the valve cover that show in the pik. The W116 has a different cruse control too. I have a '78, '79, and '80 W116 and none of them have the rubber part that shows in the pik. All 3 have a rubber connector in the linkage but its near the center of the engine. P E H |
