Does lower gas prices= Lower MB diesel and VW TDI prices?

Just curious on what ya'll thought on this. My thought is that once gas prices go back down, people won't have as much of a demand for these cars, and they won't want to pay the higher diesel costs, so the prices will drop back down to what they were a few years ago. I have a potential buyer for my Bug, so that will free up some parking space at my house, and I might consider getting another MB diesel, if I can find a reasonably priced one, or, if I also deciede to sell my truck too, I might consider getting something with and OM606, or even a VW TDI, as long as the insurance rates are less than my truck, which I feel are way to high

If I don't end up with another MB diesel, I'll probally get a Volvo or another Subaru(this time without a turbo).

Diesel car prices

My guess is that car prices will adjust with fuel prices, but only after an extended period of time. Diesel selling over gas will require several months before you see an easing of tdi pricing. I suspect there's more demand than supply for this vehicle resulting in a sustained high price for an extended period.

For mercedes with lower mpg results, a lower price, I would expect, would occur more rapidly with diesel price changes.

I have a 2001 jetta tdi and am still happy to fill up even at 40-50 cents more per gallon than RUG knowing I'm going to produce 45-50 mpg on the tank. There simply aren't that many used gas powered vehicles that can return similar mileage results.

Don't worry this won't last long. Over the next couple of years expect fuel costs to continue to rise.

On the other hand it is a darn good time to purchase a gas MB.

I've been tooling around with that idea too, since I have noticed that the prices on some of the older V8 cars has dropped alot, but I would pay for it down the road with higher gas prices, plus they only run on premium fuel

Some of the 4 cylinder ga$$er$ prices have came down some too, those little 190E 2.3's will get fairly decent gas mileage, and I can probally pick one up for under $2k, but it would have to have a 5-Speed .

I've also noticed that the prices on some of the 190D's havn't really gone up a whole lot, I think because people want to stay away from the W201 chasis because they think they will cost more in the long run, compaired to a W123 or W126. However if I can find one that has been fairly well maintained, it shouldn't cost a whole lot of money to own. The W201's i've been around have looked fairly straight forward, and somewhat simple to work on, probally not too much harder to work on than my old Subaru Legacy was. It would have to have a 5-speed as well, since I am trying to stay away from Automatic transmissions if I can...

a dude a few block from my house is selling a 81 280CE in very nice conditions for 1500 bucks... the car is zippy but it is a gas guzzler. I wonder. what to do.

This is in line with most of the prices for gassers with the noticeable exception of the SL's, 6.9, 6.3, after 1996. Otherwise most gas benz are dirt cheap. Saw also a nice white 1987 300TE at a dealer for 1000 bucks. The body was pristine, did not check the engine or tried it but still...

Coming back to pricing softening ... I did notice a softening of the prices of D on ebay. Wagons nowadays rarely brush the 7000 bucks mark.

If you don't drive much it isn't that bad. I'm sure an S430 would get almost 20mpg around town, high teens. So what if one gives up a few mpg's? 5mpg either way doesn't make much of a difference.

Well unless you drive a lot, at 10k a year such a difference is going to be hardly noticable.

I don't even think I drive that much a year, I think if I go 9k a year, that is pushing it, but I have been trying to ride my scooter alot, when I have been healthy enough, ie, no vertigo

i think that with TDI's being very fuel efficent they will still sell. I mean if you compare a gasser jetta 1.8T to a jetta TDI the gasser gets 30mpg hwy and the diesel gets 50+mpg hwy. I think even with diesel being more expensive you should still save more cents per mile in the diesel over the gasser.
