herb is back

Herb is back, no music and a little attitude. Has the 'finest' 300D for sale with the 'reasonable' buy it now price of 20,900 and a reserve just a little lower. Quite a bit of money but of course it will run forever with just a little care and maintainence. I think I miss the old ad.

Yeah, I just posted a link to that auction on the "craigslist crack smoker" thread to show there's plenty of crack on ebay too.

I'll bet his reserve is not more than $11K on that vehicle. He puts a high BIN to impart some extra "value" to it, but, he'll take a lot less than that figure.

That is one of the nicest looking ones I have seen. Wonder what he paid for it?

I don't think it is any nicer than the one you sold. Given his experience, I would guess that he bought it for MUCH less than what he will sell it for.

That's a beautiful car but you have to be smoking crack to pay 20k for it. It's still 22 years old!!! Yeah these are great cars and were arguably the best cars of their time but come on, 20k for a car that old??? This isn't some collectible Ferrari or Porsche. It's just a diesel Benz....

I'd be interested in how many of these cars he actualy sells for a good buck.

I have to give the guy credit though, he is a darn good salesman and is able to drive the value of his offerings up.

you would think for that asking price, the antenna would work.

If I'm back, does that mean I went somewhere??

It's not as if I went anywhere, I just stopped posting my offerings here...

I got the idea that people weren't terribly receptive to the idea..So I stopped about 2 years ago...I still have plenty of strange cars coming out of my ears..

Anyway, yes, I have a new ad format..It takes all of 20 minutes to create instead of 2 days...Yes its different, and not quite so fancy, but, it allows me time, which with two really young children , is a valuable commodity.

I still create the fancy ads, but only one a week... the rest get the generic autorevo ad ($10.95).

My 1984 300D is a great w123. It's the nicest i have ever owned in 15 years of bartering these old sleds. The reserve is well below the $20,900, but I had to pay blood to buy the car, and I sincerely believe the market WILL bear it.

Would you rather have a used 2005 honda accord or a mint w123 with 58k miles?

The only faults the car has are -

Antenna doesn't lower all the way down (oil, perhaps)

Door strikers on driver and passenger have deteriorated from lack of use and need replacement ( have on hand).

That's it.

The car was sold to me by the original owner last week. He kept it dealer serviced since new, and I chased him down in traffic when he left the dealership the last time. I demanded he sell me the car! The price started @ 20K.

I have been selling most of my high mile ( 150 ish) W123 wagons in the mid teens this year, so it only seemed logical that a "mint" 58k sedan would be worth more.

I set the $20,900 out there because I like the car that much...If it doesn't bring it, I'll re-formulate and perhaps author a more fitting advertisement.

You'll also note I have a 300SDL on ebay right now with one of my standard ads..We'll see which one was more effective..

I have 2 more W123 wagons right now and another w123 sedan...Fall will be busy with diesels...

If you like the car that much then y are u selling it?? also if you "demanded" that you buy it and the price started at 20K why is your buy it now only 20900 and the reserve is "way lower"? im not a rocket scientist here but wouldnt that be a BIG LOSS??? it seems kinda fishy and flaky to me, sorry herb, you have been pwnd

This seller is a used car dealer...'nuff said.

He stopped posting his listings here because of the grief he was given about them. Can't say I blame him. I know of a couple of board members who bought cars from him that were, let's say, somewhat problematic so he's probably better off selling them to eBay buyers than people who frequent this board who tend to know that an antenna mast that won't go down won't be fixed by lubing it...it needs a new mast. And what does it say about a a dealer who wants absolute top dollar and won't replace an antenna mast and a couple of door strikers?

Now I remember..It was Marty's comments....

1st off- I didn't say I wouldn't repair the two items that I listed, I simply made note of them.

2nd- I tracked down and bought the car because it was (in my mind) quite desireable. I don't often see low mileage 300D's and the market is @ an all time high. Someone else out there will agree. (If I'm wrong and I'm stuck with this car, I won't complain!)

3rd- the cars that I sold forum members weren't problematic. (John is also a dealer.) If you recall we drug this through the mud before. I'm sure John sold his 1998 Turbodiesel for more than the $9k that I sold it to him for. (current market it would fetch $13-14k)

So, I guess I've made my mind up. I'll post every listing here first.(provided Mr.Carlton says this is appropriate) I won't be chased away by one negative user. I also won't attack what he does for a living.

You should be happy to see high sale prices on your diesels. And based upon what tdi's are fetching (2006 models bring 7k over sticker at recent auctions), I don't think paying a premium for a low mileage mercedes is that bad of an idea. Who was it that said "there's nothing more expensive than a cheap mercedes".

I've watched the seller "findgreatcars" up in NJ time and time again prove me wrong what a super nice w123 was worth, so this time I felt that I had found something worth pursuing. We will see if I am wrong or right.

you know i had to get a smartass remark in. a car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. if you can get 20K for a 123, go for it. someone offered me 3k for one of my rustbuckets and I should have took it on the spot.

20 Grand for a used W123...... I would spend my 20 Grand on a new honda, not a 20's somthing year old car. I would use that 20grand as a down payment on a new VW tdi, They are going for list price here and dealers are only taking orders with one demo TDI on the lot.

Johnhef, your smartass remark is valid. I would expect everything to work with out asking him to fix it at his asking price. If the ant. does not work, what else does not work? Myself i would never buy a car on Ebay without seeing it in person.
