OT ... diesel Suburbans ... part out? Sell? Junk?
Sorry this is not MB-related, but I know there are a few folks in here who know about diesel Suburbans and might be able to advise me. I have two 80s Suburbans in very lousy condition at my dad's shop. One is a 1983 Chevy and the other a 1987 (86?) GMC. One has been sitting for about ten years, the other for six or seven. I believe the GMC was in running condition with a bad starter when it was left. However, both now are very rusty, esp. the older one, which I don't think ran at the time it was parked. My sister and her fiance want to sell them for scrap, just to get rid of them. I was wondering, though, if I might make more money by parting them out or selling them for parts. Is there any market for parts cars in these particular models? I couldn't find much on Ebay to get an idea, but I wasn't sure if that's because nobody wants them or nobody has them to sell. What parts might be salvagable, and sellable, to make it worthwhile? Or is it better to just pay someone to haul 'em off and scrap 'em?

Had a couple 6.2's myself.......
Look again on ebay and see if there are any trim parts or other easy stuff to pull off that will bring some $ then scrap the rest. Or get them running and sell them as little old lady Burbs. ![]() Cheers, Bill |

A parable: I owned a 1986 Diesel Suburban until the year 2000, when I bought a new F-150. The Suburban was played out but still running pretty well. The salesman at the dealership told me that the most he could give me for it was $1000. I didn't care what he was going to offer me because I just wanted it gone. It had served its purpose. Anyway, the next night I drove it over to the dealership for the salesman to evaluate. The look on his face was priceless. He was shocked by its condition, but to his credit, he stuck to the deal. A few days later my new truck arrived, so I went back down to the dealership again to get it. I was just passing time with the salesman while the paperwork was getting done, so I asked if the Suburban had been sold, since I didn't see it on the lot. He said, "Tom, we sold it to a family in Southern Missouri and I think they are living in it." The lesson to be learned from the parable, Sell it to a family in Southern Missouri as a trailer. You will probably get more for it than as transportation.

if they have the factory dark tinted windows(it will say neutral tint on the glass) and barn doors on the back those are worth some money if not rusted thru.also if you could get them to run there are people on a 6.2-6.5 site that would probably be interested, the 87 will have the overdrive trans, the 83 might also ,mine did.heck throw em on ebay as parts cars, never know what you might get for em.
