my 1983 240D has air in the fuel lines

I am having a tough time starting her in the morning. I need some info on maybe what I should do. Ive been told that I probably have an air leak in the fuel lines?

Look for fuel weeping in the rubber lines, and also look for cracks or tiny splits in the lines, as fuel will not always leak at the split.

After you check that, check your hand primer, and all your metal lines.

Also check your primary filter. I had one split, and it did not leak fuel while the engine was running, but the air bubble was huge. It did leak when the engine was first shut off.

My 300D was getting air in through a bad primer pump. The thing did not leak, but I noticed a problem when I pumped the line after a filter change. Then it dumped about a tablespoon of fuel and it built up pressure.

Whats the age and condition of the glow plugs? That can also play a major role in how easy they are to start. If the fuel lines are old just get some line and replace some, its pretty cheap/easy to do. I did it about a year ago on my car, none were leaking yet, but they were old, now I don't have to worry about it with all new hoses on it. :D Also replaced all my glowplugs last month when one of them fried.

my primer pump leaks, could that be where the air is coming from?

Yep, replace it. That will get rid of one leak for sure.

Replacement of the primer on my car was required as well. Easy enough to do, and the newer style works really well.

Do you know FOR SURE all your glow plugs are working?

I checked the glow plugs with a volt meter and they were all getting electricity. I pulled one out immediately after and it was stone cold. so I felt on top of the other three and I could not feel any heat coming from them. is it common for all four to go out at the same time?

No vacuum in the tank (Plugged breather)?

Bosch. Other brands won't last nearly as long. Get a set of the "Bosch Duraterm" (the ones sold on the fastlane site) and they'll last for years. They are about $13 apiece but its worth it.
