So many diesels, so little time....

Greetings from Helsinki.

Everything here (well, at least all the Mercedes-Benz™) seem to be diesel-powered. Not many 123s still exist, but I have seen a few, in particular, a 240TD w/4-speed manual.

Lots and lots of current issue Benzos are used as taxis...many of the proto-Sprinters (in all shapes and formats) are still running and used in everyday commerce.

Take care all!
Randy

Randy,

Greetings. Nice written snapshot (yes, some pics would be cool). We could use some Finnish performance seminars here. You could throw in a sauna and winter splash, too.

Not looking for straw here but, yesterday in Tallinn, Estonia I discovered that you can successfully mix a lime/sand plaster in a regular concrete mixer.

As far as picts go, I'm taking quite a few shots of the unusual cars but risk looking suspicious since there's an Asian summit conference going on here and the place is crawling with plainclothes cops.

Helsinki's WAAAAY cool this time of year.

I went there in 2001 and met my old pen pal there (we'd been writing since 1961 when we were just kids) and met him for the first time!! What a treat.

We went on a BBQ, took the obligatory sauna and jumped in the lake afterwards. It's a wonderful experience, not to be missed.

If you have a chance, chedk out the military museum, the outdoor market by the harbor, and check the train station (next to the 1952 Olympic stadium)

It's worth it to go to the see the castle on the Island outside of town, (tours leave from the harbor) but it's REALLY worth it to see...

Buy some black licorice ice cream in a cone, those Finns reallyknow how to make it.

Also a great time to go to a Mercedes dealer, and pick up some Euro parts if you want them. I got some authentic orange W26 MB side blinkers, plus a couple of Finnish Mercedes sales brochures...

We as a group can find the cheapest shipping charges from this side for you. After all we do try to be helpfull on this site. There is no way you can know if it's the last straw until you purchase it. I believe they are even available in a straw yellow flavour kind of color. Priced any? How about their ebay system? Sure to be some winners there. Wonder if a local salvage yard has a good five speed cheap? Or even a nice set of euro lights?Overweight baggage charge of say 60 lbs should not be that bad. Enjoy your trip.
