Copper Washers Supplied w/ Oil Filter?

This one I'm a little mystified on. Didn't see anything mentioned in the FSM, Owner's Bible, on any of the threads, or on the oil filter box itself about this.

Included with the Purolator oil filter I used the other day, was a replacement o-ring for the cover, and two copper washers. When I removed the old oil filter, there wasn't any sign that anything resembling these two washers had been used when it was installed.

Do these washers have a purpose, or are they included for use in an application other than an '87 MB 300D?

Wouldn't surprise me if they blew them off on the last oil change, considering what else I found when I changed the oil!

The washers are for the oil pan drain plug. Pick the one that fits your plug best. Collect the others until you have a bunch, put them in a bag with a name that has "miracle" in it and sell it on eBay!

I was a little ticked off at my OEM MB oil filter because it only came with the rubber gasket for the filter housing, no copper washer for the drain plug. Next time I am making the dealer give me one, I should have checked before I left. Oh well. The reused one seems to be doing just fine. I probably will order Hengst ones again when I place a fastlane order at some point in the future, I still have about 4,200 miles to go on my Synthetic Oil I am running.

You have a funny definition of the word "rock", unless you were using it to describe the contents of your filter.

if you want to save a crush washer here is what you do a bonehead taught me how i think its fair to share this info

take the copper washer and heat it up on a gas stove or with a lighter.. no longer than 1-2 seconds.. your just warming it up... let it cool and take some high grit sand paper .. i used 400 grit and sanded both sides until smooth and level.. then reuse

i did that to the copper washer for the screw on fuel filter because it was leaking bad.. the procedure fixed the leak for the most part only thing i couldnt solve was the lil nic in the filter housing so some high temp copper sealer did the trick for that side.

Well I'll be! Would be nice if they'd do that for ALL cars.

PO had used one of those el-cheapo generic drain plugs with a rubber gasket on it that you can get at one of the chain auto parts stores. Luckily, amongst all the other parts I've been ordering for the beast, I got a relacement OE drain plug and washers, so at least that part is back to stock now!

Thanks for the help!

You mentioned about a before and after comparison on Hengst oil filters. That brings up another question. Bypass tube on mine had been clogged for god knows how long before I cleaned it out. Just how much of a difference does the bypass section of the oil filter make in the appearance/service life/etc of the oil?

and it was the same thing with the MANN filter for the 603. When i pulled it out of the filter housing there were twigs sticking out of the filter!

When i opened it up i found alot of garbage like pine needles and twigs. Its too bad the turkish fram filter with the cotton string is only available to 617's. The 603 seems to have the mexican made cotton waste, bugs, and sticks like every other filter.

Don't mean to hijack this thread but.....

Anyone ever notice the oil filters always come with the big o ring and the copper washers but very few I get come with the smaller o rings. I always use Mann. Maybe other brands come with the "complete" kit?

Just an observation.

Cheers,

Bill

MB went cheap on us in the last few years and stopped including the drain plug washers in some of their oil filters (the M120 V12 filter still comes with it for some reason though). They changed the part number on the oil filter and all they changed inside was the lack of the crush ring. Our parts department is stocked full of retards and they never remember to give out the ring and when they do, its seldom the correct size.

Is there some sort of incentive for retards to work in the parts department? Doesn't matter what parts place you go to either. Got some oil for my tractor the other day from the stealership. Being a fairly new tractor I hadn't changed the oil in it since I've owned it. Little 3 cylinder diesel so I figure 3 quarts would do. Now you would think the parts guy would've said thats not enough; after all he did know what tractor I have as I gave him the model # to get the filter. The darn thing holds 3 1/2 quarts so back down the road I go. Another 75 mile round trip just because the numbskull behind the counter didn't say anything.

Yeah, I'm a numbskull too. Should've looked it up myself before I left.

Sorry about the rant....

John, do the dealership filters come with the small orings? Or do they give you the big one only?

Cheers,

Bill

wondered about that also - there does not seem to be any kind of consistency here. But on the upside, I've used the larger ones on my w201 drain plug and they seem to hold just fine. (it seems to be the gaskets that leak like a siefe)
