Changing glow plugs 1980 300sd

Seems like I have read of problems in removing the rear glow plug on this engine. I need to change them soon and was wondering if any special tools are needed.

I did a google search and a search of this site and did not find old discussions even though I am pretty sure there has been some.

Thanks

Removing ALL of the injection lines makes it easier. Remove them TOGETHER as one piece. you can slightly loosen the cross pieces between the lines to make it easier.

Gear wrenches.

You'll thank yourself a thousand times over for buying a set, if you haven't already!

I'm rugged, I do it with normal wrenches (13mm and 8mm) and with the IP lines all in. Yes, it does hurt.

Good advice..then use a gear wrench to remove the GPs

No special tools needed. Just patience and a small dab of antiseize when you put them in.

I looked the injection lines over this afternoon and it looks like they would come off in three pieces which would not be too bad. Even with them off, it will be a tight fit for my hands.

Will look at gear wrenches and see what they look like.

Thanks for all the responses.

I also do them with the lines in place, I just use short wrenches to get them started. I can usually turn them out by hand once they are loose. Just try not to drop the small nuts and washers behind the IP.

I just replaced two on the 240D because my wife told me it was hard starting on cool mornings. I asked her how long the GP light hadn't been coming on and she said, "a while, I thought it was burned out."

My wife did mine last week, while I was at work. She has lots of scratches and bruises for her efforts, but she got it done. I was playing solitare for a few days after though.

Damn, and I feel fortunate that my wife comes out too help work on a car when I need an extra hand. You are indeed a lucky man

Next time tell her to remove the injector lines which will save her hands

If you do use antiseize, get the coper one it will make a good ground between them (GP) and cylinder head.Little is needed.

I wish my wife would assist or work on her own cars... I am THE mechanic when something is out...
