Oil/Fuel Filter Q's

I recently purchased an '83 240D, and I'm new to MB diesels. I'm curious to know if there is a general consensus of which brand of oil filters and/or fuel filters I should use. Should I be spending the extra cash for the Mann or Hengst oil filters and the Mahle or Bosch fuel filters?

I'm coming from and VAG 10valve 5cylinder background-- there is definitely a preference for the OE type filters in that crowd, since those motors carry such high oil pressure and the OE filters are designed accordingly.

TIA,
nate in detroit

Alot of people here reccomend OE filters for their cars. Usually the ones from Mann, Hegnst, and a couple of others are the best, and they are OE filters.

Just dont use a Fram filter...... Only use Fram filters if you are putting it into a Yugo or something like that... lol.....

Thanks for the info, guys... I always spend the money on good filters, just wanted to know if there was a preference.

Bill--

My car is indeed a stick--- I've got two '80s German cars, both with manual transmissions, manual windows and locks, and no sunroof, just the way I like them! The car is maple yellow- it's the one that twalgamuth had posted for sale a while ago...pics can still be found at

Couldn't get the link to work.

My car is that yellow color too, crank windows and henna red interior. No sunroof either. I'm getting 31 to 33 mpg.

Cheers,

Bill

Actually, in this case, the Fram filter made in Turkey seems to be the best one available at the moment. The bypass section of the Fram CH-2930 made in Turkey is stuffed with tight cotton string. Everything else out there including MB brand filters have cotton gin scrap in the bypass section, seeds, bug parts, sticks, rocks, etc. There was a CH-2930 made in Mexico, which was garbage, but I have not seen it on the shelf in several years.

Someone posted a thread with a link to pictures a while back. I will see if I can dig up the link.

Look at the above link. Would you rather use a Fram or a Hengst?

Wow, after looking at those I am definatley going with the Fram's, so long as they are the made in Turkey ones. (Our autozone has them, I've checked) Plus they are like $9, way better than 17 at the dealer!!

Use BOSCH made in India here, for fuel and oil, hasn't let me down so far, plenty of mileage on my engines.

Sorry the bosch ones are just as bad as the hengst and purolator, cotton gin waste, bugs, sticks, etc.

For fuel, whichever is cheapest in my opinion they are all about the same. No bugs sticks and cotton waste in them!

Agreed, but then if my engine runs flawlessly for 500,000+ KM, I am totally satisfied, change my Delo 400 at 6000KM so yet to see anything bad on the engine.
