Goofy Euro-US conversion EGR

I thought that I'd share the EGR valve setup that came on my 1984 Euro 300D:

Yes that is copper pipe. Yes that is a pair of non-EGR manifolds (that I'm selling with the engine).

I'm really surprised that they (and I don't know which they) hacked this thing in there.

Someone wanted to retrofit EGR really badly

That aluminum block looks like something out of an AC system.

How did they provide vacuum to the EGR valve? US issue throttle controlled vacuum valve?

It has a bracket on the valve cover like it would have the US throttle valves, but that set of valves was gone before I purchased the vehicle. The EGR valve wasn't connected to anything when I purchased it.

WHY would someone actually want an EGR? From what I've read, it lowers engine life, plugs up the intake and ALDA line, and reduces power...

To meet EPA regulations on a grey market car. That is some hacked setup.

The good news for this engine is that it probably didn't have an EGR functioning for most of its life. In DE it had no EGR, and I'm guessing that as soon as it was registered here it had the EGR disabled. I bought it from the original owner so he probably saw the mod and did the disabling.

i've seen a similar setup on another members car at a gtg last year. I lucked out and my euro wagon didn't have anything hacked into it.

I have seen worse, some didn't even have a valve. Most dump all of the exhaust in one cylinder and so don't really do anything useful.
