Running an idea past.....
What benefit (if any) would there be in a hot air extraction system?
basically, a functional vent on the hood (done TASTEFULLY of course)

I would bet strategically placed reflective heat shielding would do a better job. Even then, several electronic thermometers placed in different locations might surprise you with the results.
I will be honest with you. I don't believe it would have significant effect. These cars do a pretty good job of shedding heat from the engine area in stock form. Even in 100+ degree heat!

Well, I'll let you in on my idea,
I have an 81 280Z and it has these nifty flush mounted vents on the hood, they're Asymetrical so they even LOOK functional, I'd like to see them on my hood, but I just can't bring myself to do something like that unless I can say that they are functional, and not just for looks. I'll say they're very european styled, to spite being on a Crapanese (no offense) car. One is a vent and the other is an inlet to allow cool air in and push the hot air out of the engine compartment. These cars had MAJOR heat issues, to such and extent that they installed a floor tempurature sensor. so I have no doubt that these vents do serve a purpose. I could also use the inlet as a functional cold air induction system, of sorts.

"several electronic thermometers placed in different locations might surprise you with the results."
Funny, I've been planning this. OM617.952 anyone have any choice points they want to see measured? I can do up to about 10 per run (If my Kdut lines are long enough, or if I can bum 10 extensions from fellow techs at work). I'll post all results back here (likely to do it this weekend or next). -nB

Maybe try this........
Get a salvage hood. That way you can "pop and patch" holes in different places and test with thermometers without major regrets down the road. I would be afraid of modifying the original along those lines and find out later that it did nothing to help and other problems popped up. Then you would end up with a bunch of "scabs".

Hard to believe
I find it hard to believe that at least one of the engineers at Mercedes would not have thought of incorporating vents in the hood of these cars if it was likely to have helped significantly.
Am I naive for thinking this way?
