Speed TV, 2 Guys Garage, Banks Diesel

G'mornin' Folks,

Did anyone watch the latest episode of "Two Guy's Garage"? It featured a story regarding a Bonneville "Land Speed Record" set by Banks Power Systems in a Dodge Dakota powered by a Cummins.

It included a neat segment shot at the Banks Company's Shop, and a lot of neat stuff regarding "Hot Rodding" Diesels.....

Mr. Banks stated (not exact quote here), that he has come to the conclusion that more guys are Hot Rodding Diesels than gassers these days!!!

Bear in mind that Banks is in the busness of developing and selling performance products.....but his Diesel modifications were really inovative.....especially the billet oil pan, that is designed with cross webs that actually support the crank journal bearing caps!!!

Banks is about the only really good diesel tuning company out there. They realize that you should have more air than fuel and black smoke is just wasted energy.

that girdle design is common on race motors such as indy car cosworths.

my old 76 volvo with the renault v6 had it too!

that was a slick little engine. although it was a bit weak on cam oiling, it was robust. they based the dominating f1 renault turbo cars in the late 80's on the block.

and the bmw turbo motor was based on the 2002 block.

Banks and Ambulances

Back in 1988 I worked as a Paramedicfor a Rural Nevada Ambulance service that covered apx.70 miles of I-80 and apx. 200 mile of State highways, etc..they replaced the gas Big Block Ford Ambulance (the ambulance to be replaced BURNED to the ground while I was driving- but I digress) with a Ford 6.9 Diesel E350 with a 4:10 Rear End. Needless to say top speed was 67mph.
The county shop was staffed with great group of Car Guys and Hot Rodders who had heard of a guy out of SLC, UT (?) who was putting Turbos on the 6.9.
After a 6 month long and Loud and very Public debate on the "Need For Speed", the County gave us the $$$ to buy a Banks System. MR. Banks delivered the system to the shop and helped with the install as it was the first Ambulance with a turbo and an overdrive system.
While still slow, the tranformation is somewhat like a 240 vs. a SD. The turbo was never a problem and top speed rose to a more reasonable 82mph.
I'm always glad to hear his company's name and to know that we were one of his first successful experiments.

Regards
