UHHHHGGGG Not AGIAN!!! also BD question

ok, so here is my story,

Every time i take a trip on any car i have owned, somthing always breaks :behead: the mercedes is no acception. the brand new exaust system i put on it a week ago for $400.00 is now raddling after a 3 and 1/2 hour trip. only when the RPM's are low can u hear it rattling, if im driving it or its above regular idel speed you cant hear it, and when u turn it off you can here it clunk, the same sound it made before when the exaust was bad. so any who... back to the shop for that, im not dropping $400.00 for it to break,

i drove the mercedes 3 and a half hours with not a single probablem other than that! drove 80- 85 the whole way, tride to keep it below 85. at what speed dose the 240D start to consum oil???

also while im down at Eastern Illinois University, i went to the gas station to get something and i was gonna fill up, but on the diesel pumps it said BIO-DIESEL. is that ok to put into my car?? its just a standard Euro 240D or dose it need a special system, kinda wierd, never seen bio-diesel for sale before.

so thats my story, and thoughts or opinion or anything would be nice

thanks

Check your exhaust system to make sure something isn't hanging down. The last thing you need is to lose your exhaust system on the road. Something must have come loose for it to be rattling, or it was not installed quite right and is knocking against the chassis pan or frame under certain conditions.

I have heard of WVO cleaning all the crud out of the tank and lines which clogs the filters and that rubber lines need to be replaced with viton, but I don't know about BioDiesel. Do a search and I am sure you will find the answer.

You won't have any issues with B20, if it was made properly, but that is as common (or not) as bad diesel fuel.

Check underneath your car, I bet you broke a rubber donut (rubber piece that holds the exhaust up). Replacements are cheap and you can probably install them yourself.

The exhaust must be very close to hitting the frame or something and you only hear it when the engine really shakes. (Happened with my Jeep when it shut off, sounded like hell- it was about 2mm from the cross brace where it was hard to see and diagnose) If they didn't replace the whole exhaust system, then most likely it's hitting at the part they didn't replace. I'd make sure your rubber exhaust hangers are all there and in good condition. Just keep in mind that the exhaust is probably not actually touching anything when sitting, it's only very close to something.

Agreed.

Would add here that the donuts will slip off if you back over a high curb. I've had curbs push up on my exhaust allowing the donut to slip right off.

Bill

almost the whole exaust was replaced all the way up, everything on it should be/is brand new all the way up to the header pipes. probably a donut is broke. ill check it out tomorrow, but yea when i turn it off it clanks, its not bad, it just kinda sucks cause i just spent 400$ on that. it sounds like its vibrating right were the new connection is kinda underneartht the passanger side. hmmm guess ill have to investigate, think its safe to drive it 3 and 1/2 hours? gotta get home tomorrow :-)

Climb under and take a look. If its just the donut missing a piece of coat hanger will work until you get the donut. You don't want your exhaust falling off before you get back!

pump that nectar into your rig man, and help save the world. think of it as liquid :Peace!:

Could the rattling noise be a heatshield in the engine compartment, near the firewall? (or any other heatshield for that matter)

also could be a slight misalignment of part of the system. if this is the case the offending part must have the clamps removed and be twisted into the proper position.

another potential problem area is the tranny/ exhuast mount arm. this has rubber isolation donuts on it. if they go bad you can get some exhaust problems.

TO LATE!!! heh. so i was on my way back this morning about a hundred miles from Charleston and 100 miles from CHicago so i was in the middle. i was going 75-80 i saw a nice late 90's 300 turbo pass me and he waved and i waved back... then ALL OF A SUDDEN "THUD""..... "GRUMMMMMMMMMMMMBLE"...... SCRAPPPPPPPPP

Pulled over, keep in mind that i have corn fields surounding me, bend down only to see the exaust hanging down. THey replaceed it all the way to the pipe after the headers but not that pipe that comes from the headers to underneath the car. and it just broke off. So now i am looking around the car PIssed cause i just had a 400$ exaust put on and its already broken and couldnt find anything to tie the pipe up for the rest of my 120 MILES!!!

then to the rescue!!!! a state trooper comes and asked what happened. After i told him i had absolutly nothing to hold the pipe up, he went down the revien(sp???) to were there was a barbed wire fence, he twisted some off and i put it on there, then he ripped a piece of a towel off and i "reenforced it". needless to say, that patch of old rusty barbed wire and towel got me 120 miles until i got home, and let me tell you was she LOUD!!!

so when i called the shop and told them what happened they were like "ohh it finally rusted out" i was like yea it did, why didnt u tell me before jacka$$ that it needed to be replaced. then i ordered the new part and should be in by wednesday. needless to say if the exaust is bent because of them not telling me i needed to replace that pipe or even replace it soon, they best believe they are going to give me a whole new exaust..

so anyways thats my story about how a little clanking with the muffler turned into a catostrofic failuer
